Surrounded by beautiful scenery but just a few minutes' walk from Hay-On-Wye's centre, this charming inn has a traditional wooden-beamed bar. Dating back hundreds of years, Oliver Cromwell is rumoured to have stayed in the 17th century. The Old Black Lion is close to the Lion Gate, an original entrance to the old walled town of Hay-on-Wye. There is free parking on site, and the surrounding Brecon Beacons National Park offers picturesque walks and views. Each room is traditional in style, with a carpeted floor and en suite bathroom. Each also has a flat-screen TV for guests to use, and facilities for making tea and coffee. A seasonal lunch and snack menu is available in the restaurant, and fresh local ingredients are used. The Old Black Lion has been awarded an AA Rosette for its high quality food.

Relaxed atmosphere - Old Black Lion is a wonderful old period building- 13th Century! Friendly attentive staff, smashing manager. We enjoyed great food (had both evening meal and breakfast). Overall excellent value for money. I particularly liked the friendly teddy bears in the bedrooms- nice touch!! We will be back.... : ). Lovely hotel with lots of character, great room- clean, cosy and comfortable. Good location, very close to town and within driving distance of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. Breakfast was good, all freshly cooked and filling. Staff were lovely, very welcoming and friendly.

Vegetarian cooking was excellent and imaginative. Good value too in quite an expensive town generally. The staff were excellent, welcoming and accommodating from the off. So good I will always stay there with my company and any staff I have with me whenever we have a meeting or week away within 20 miles. Best b&b I've stayed at, and I've stayed at many!. Quite a small inn/hotel, quaint with low beams & creaky floors; comfortable & well enough appointed. Nice bar, nice food, friendly staff, within easy walking distance of centre. Good car park. The Cornwell suite was amazing...and very old ;-) The food was pleasant and it was only a few steps to the book shops. Room was tastefully furnished and bed was comfortable. Staff where very helpful. Stayed in the superior room which was interesting, had a very comfortable bed but was a bit too dark and in need of an update ( needs an update with lighter bed linen and soft furnishings for a more contemporary look like the bar area). Shower water pressure a little low, but shower is nice overall. Our bedroom was certainly clean, but we thought rather small. I understand there are/were larger rooms but we were unaware of their existance. They may have been pre-booked however. The shower was not very efficient. Nothing was below standard. The shower head was a bit dodgy and a bathroom mat would have been useful. Just not enough time off from work to go again soon. Breakfast times were slightly later than I would have ideally liked, however the breakfast itself was excellent. Some of the furniture is well worn and could benefit from reupholstering. Tight car park. Mattress a bit lumpy. not geared up for early breakfast but tried when asked. Rooms were a bit small. Room rather tired. Water pressure in the room 3 shower was poor. No big deal but there were a lot of paintings stored in the fireplace in the breakfast room which was a bit odd but didn't put us off the very tasty breakfast. Quirky stairs. Character. Shower. The single rooms were very small and the bed in there were only 180 cm!. Room cleanliness was a bit cosmetic, room need a good clean top to bottom - dusty walls. Split level en-suite was a bit difficult to negotiate. The bedroom had little privacy onto the outside street, net curtains would have solved this problem. Room a bit musty. There was an old sock in the wardrobe, which appeared to have been there some time (dirty and dusty), the window was draughty and rattled noisily, the bedroom lights were dim, and the food and drinks were vastly overpriced for what they were. could do with more comfortable chair in the bedroom. Poor shower, and expensive for a small twin room. Accommodation in annexe very mundane - small, lacked attention to cleanliness and can hear every footstep and conversation of guests in room above. Certainly not four star - very overpriced.
