Beautifully situated in the historic market town of Oakham, this 17th-century former farmhouse has been lovingly restored to offer luxurious guest rooms with Freeview TV, whilst still retaining its original features.
A wonderfully characteristic, listed building, The Admiral Hornblower Hotel & Restaurant provides a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for your stays in Rutland. The smallest county in England, Rutland is home to historic villages, rolling countryside and the traditional market towns of Oakham and Uppingham.
In the evenings you can enjoy the wonderful freshly prepared food in the Admiral Hornblower’s restaurant. All meals are accompanied by a wonderful choice of wines from the cellar and a variety of beers, including 3 traditional hand drawn ales.

Stayed two nights for a family wedding at the castle. The staff were friendly and very kind and helpful. The hotel is in keeping with the age and character of the building, but the showers/bathroom were very clean and modern. Rooms were spacious and the 'full English' breakfast was tasty.I would certainly recommend the Hornblower for anyone visiting Oakham castle (three or four minutes walk) or the nearby Rutland Waters. alla recensioner »
Stayed one night at the end of walking the Viking Way. We were in the stable block out the back of the main hotel. The room was spacious, quiet and clean, if a little aged. The hotel, bar and restaurant staff were all friendly, efficient and helpful. Ate in the hotel restaurant and the quality was excellent, with very reasonable prices. Breakfast was cooked to order.
Close to the train station and Rutland Water, food was tasty with no long waits and the staff were very friendly. My partner and I got engaged on the morning we stayed and the four poster bed and touch lamps were really romantic and the bed was incredibly comfy. Bathroom was clean and chocolates on the pillow is always a winner!.
Restaurant, good simple tasty food served quickly. Service and staff friendly. Our downstairs en suit very nice, hot water, great shower etc. Rooms behind pub in private courtyard - you will need directions from staff to find due to ghastly one way streets but excellent , very safe location.
Excellent location, walking distance from the train station, and although on the main thoroughfare, we could not hear any traffic during our stay. The room was wonderful, beautifully warm on the cold winter's weekend, and the breakfast excellent.
The welcome by the friendly check in staff member.
Crisp cotton sheets and duvet.
The breakfast was at a sensible time and delicious - poached eggs as they should be. Thank you Chef.
Off road parking.
Close proximity to Church.
We had one of the deluxe Queen size rooms for a night and found it very
spacious. The evening meal was excellant and the breakfast the next day
was just as good. All members of staff were very friendly.
really helpful and friendly staff.
We loved having the extensive balcony, although the weather wasn,t good
The beds were really cumfy and warm and the hot water was brilliant..
Close to Rutland Water for fishing, lovely location in the town with all amenities, staff lovely and helpful, clean, quaint, lovely food. Value for money.
There is nothing to dislike, nice clean room (would be great in summer with the double doors of the room open) comfy bed, good food and excellent staff.
Quirky, a bit different from the usual run of the mill hotel. Very good breakfast with everything freshly cooked to order.
Lovely building, we had a meal in the restaurant one night which was very nice and staff were very helpful.

Comfortable bed, large shower and good value for money.
comfy rooms, secure parking, helpful staff, great food.
Closeness of Bar and Carpark (free) to Rooms.
Very friendly, quiet, clean. Nice atmosphere.
Room 1 is the most amazing room! Demand it!!.
Pleasant, nice size room. Good breakfast.
Friendly staff & ambiance of the bar.
Room was excellent. Full of character.
The food and the rooms were very good.
atmosphere, very pleasent and relaxed.
the room very comfortable and clean.
Large quiet and comfortable room.
comfortable & friendly.
Food great, warm welcome.
Evening meal was good and breakfast was satisfactory. Shower was
probably the best we've experienced in a hotel.
Right in centre of Oakham, characterful rooms. Nice real pieces of old
furniture. Good cooked breakfast.
carparking off road,large beer garden.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
Central location.
Location.
The beds were reasonably comfy and it's right in the middle of town. Overall the breakfast was good apart from tasteless sausages and luke warm coffee.
Position and good value lunch time food.
Nothing.
No WiFi in the room but a cracking fast signal in the hotel bar.
The wardrobe in room 4 opened every time you walked past it despite the lock on the front and it was a little noisy in the evening but neither were issues that really impacted on the stay.
Room ceiling very squeaky and as hotel staff member was living there, last to bed , first up meant our nights sleep could have been longer. Bed mattress somewhat saggy, room a little tired, TV needs replacing. But would use again!.
Only tiny niggles - the vacuuming in the main pub being done during Sunday breakfast (not the best after a wedding the night before…) and while the staff provided excellent service and were wonderfully polite to the customers, they were loud and crude to one another, which seemed a little strange.
The very large spider in the shower and in the corner of the room.
The hair belonging to a previous guest in the shower and on the scatter cushion on the bed.
The access from a dark alleyway after midnight. Thankfully my hostess and her husband walked back with me to the hotel.
The street noise at 1am.
Unfortunately it took us a short while to locate the carpark as there
were no directions, the water for the bath was luke warm and we
didn't succeed in connecting to the free wifi.
I woke in the night hearing a strange noise, it was like a musical instrument, was it a horn? In my sleepy state I imagined the Admiral striding around the inn blowing his horn in the deep dark night. However I realized my husband was deep asleep snoring at his best!.
a member of staff had to go up to their room at the side of our door and his door banged. Also above the kitchen so noises from that.
No hot water in the morning! They were very nice and apologetic and said they would get someone in to look at the boiler but we weren't staying another night. Tepid showers don't do it for me I'm afraid.
Heated towel rail in bathroom was on constantly-had to keep bathroom door shut to stop heat filling the bedroom too. Staff unable to turn it off as without it there would be no hot water, going into the bathroom was like entering a sauna, especially with the heat wave we are experiencing!!.
shower surround needs work and bringing up to standard
should be able to control radiators as too hot.
Temperature control on shower!.
En suite was rather a squeeze. A little time and effort needs to be spent on some tidying of the premises - for example, the entrance to the building which included our room was cluttered and produced a bad image - fifteen minutes of tidying and then either relocating or throwing away what was stored there would make a huge difference.
Nothing.
No shower.
Very small TV.
Some fittings need mending. (window blind, door knob, loo roll holder).
Nothing to say it's as good as I hoped.
Ground floor room. There was nothing wrong with it - we just don't like ground floor rooms.
The room above had creaky floor boards so could sometimes here other guests walking around.
Rm.6, needs a bit of attention, carpet by the bed worn, too clean by the vertical rail in the shower.
Room might be a bit small for a lengthy stay, but for one or two nights it is fine.
Whats not to like?.
Furniture needs attention.
The boiler adjoining room 9 - Too Noisy !.
Radiators in room turned off. Only form of heating was a halogen heater which was inadequate for size of room.
Noisy bar and no where comfortable to sit and relax.
receptionist on Sunday evening.
restuarant service very slow, also lack of vegetarian options on menu. i requested veggi breakfast and this was overlooked and in the evevning askesd foe vegetarian pasta and when served it had chicken in it.
Parking tight and tricky to find.
Only inconvience was that shower was attached to bath, personally like a stand up shower in morning. Would not put me off going back though.
The original double room which we booked was not available due to the
heating not working and the only room available was a twin. Room was at
the front of the hotel and Saturday night is very rowdy with nightclubs
in both directions from the hotel. Also, parked out the front and had
the wing mirror kicked off the car. Parking is available around the back
but we were told it was safe out the front.
Bathroom window did not open and no ventilation fan. Blinds not working
well in bedroom.
Air conditioner for the kitchen on the outside of the room, continous drone all night.
The hotel is in need of some repair and tender loving care.
Paint , woodwork repair
No shower in the bathroom .
The room across the car park, lack of love for the restaurant, and other bar areas.
The room was hotter than the sun but we couldn't open the windows due to road noise. The service wasn't great. We went for breakfast at 0930 and couldn't find a table for two because none of them had been cleared. We went to the same hotel 2 years ago and unfortunately it is looking very tired now with a notable drop in quality of service.
The room we had (room 9) was extremely noisy and hot from being adjacent to a boiler cupboard.
When I explained this to staff they were just "sorry about that" - not good enough!
We won't be returning.
I had to send my breakfast back as it had a hair in it.
