Far from city center, on a mountain.
The cheapest I've seen near Bergen. I was travelling with a car, so I appreciated free parking. Location is good if you are with a car: there is a nice view to Bergen and a trail to the mountain of Fløyen (see Fløibanen). Fair breakfast. WiFi was working in my room (single) - free. Complimentary coffee&cookies in the evening (unexpected). Guest kitchen.
Norway hotels are overpriced. That single was 56 euros, which is a little more expensive that one'd like to pay in Europe. In addition, you should bring your own linen and towels or rent for extra. Many of the guests are guys looking for a job in Bergen area (not a problem for me, though).
The employee at the front desk was very nice and friendly and went out of his way to help me out with finding a trip to the Fjords The place was very nice and clean and I really liked everything about it!!! Would definately recommend it to others
It is really comfortable place. Everyone is very friendly. There is very good combination of cost and quality. And! There is Ulrich not so far from Montana Hostel))
Loved the atmosphere, loved that there were so many areas to gather and lounge. Breakfast was great too.

Some guests were a bit too loud on their internet phones while in the common areas. Perhaps a reminded to keep conversations quiet or to set an area aside for internet phone calls.

The hostel was quite clean with nice clean kitchen and we enjoyed our stayed there. Also the lady at the reception was quite helpful and pleasant.

Staffs are friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast. The hostel is located on the highest mountain in Bergen, that means you don't really need to take a ride on a cable car to enjoy the beautiful view of the city.
This is absolutely great hostel for young (and not only for them) people. I can surely recommend to stay at Montana. We were looking for some cheap accommodation and we like what we got for our money.

1. breakfast - very nice buffet food including ham, bacon, fish, vegetables, toast, biscuit, milk, yogurt, cereals, caviar, cheese, fruit, orange juice and coffee, and etc. 2. staff - very kind and helpful - they prepared the breakfast take-away including sandwiches,strawberry jam and orange juice for me as i need to departure around 6:45am which is earlier than the breakfast time

Our every year's choice for staying in Bergen. Clean, friendly, great breakfast, many facilities (kitchen, laundry, table tennis, bbq garden, living room,....). The "cookies & coffee" informal meeting was very pleasant surprise this year:-)

We loved the breakfast! Our room was great cuz we had a private bathroom.
The fact that people are allowed to smoke right outside the main enterance and on patio outside dining hall. It reaked of smoke every time we entered and in the main hallway.
The receptionists are friendly and helpful. The room is nice.

Not so cheap for a Youth Hostel that isn't central (well ok, this is Norway...;), Breakfast, though decent, is not in kvitåvatn Fjellstoge Youth Hostel's league! (Pas si bon marché pour une AJ - mais bon, c'est la Norvège...; Petit dèj correct mais ne rivalise pas avec celui de sa cousine de kvitåvatn Fjellstoge (Gausta) !)

Very good value for money, the hostel has a nice terrace with a wonderful view over the city.
For some reason I did no t have hot water in shower, so I washed the kids and myself in a cold one (very healthy! :). For us locations was good since we travelled by car, but for pedestrians it may be difficult to get there.

Poor directions to hostel on their website. Charged me in us dollars without asking me my preference and the machine charged me an extra 3%. The staff didn't even realize it when I pointed it out to them

The staff is very friendly. Breakfast was very good for a hostel. Free coffee and tea. It's easy to get to the city center by bus.
We had a very small room with a bunk bed. Not a good choice for not young people.

although it was not the cheapest hostel we stayed in, it is a very nice hostel; the double rooms are quite small but ok; an amazing view from behind the hostel over the whole bay of Bergen!!! the kitchen is great equipped and you can use a BBQ on the terrace, where you get the charcoal provided; there is a bus stop close to the hotel and it's 15 minutes to the city center.

Surprisingly good. Location was a bit tricky to find in brand new rented car GPS, instead had to rely on Google Maps (offline mode). Apart from that, everything was fine - breakfast was excellent. Staff were very helpful in helping to decide which fjords to see and how to best get there.
Actually, nothing comes to mind. Everything was good few nights I stayed at this hostel.

While not as closes to city center as others, the location can't be beat for views of the city and quiet location. Birdsong was the only noise.

everything was very nice. Location is a bit remote, you have to go by bus from the city center but the location is beautiful - on top os a hill and you get a nice view of the city, especially in the night. Another good thing was the breakfast - really good and filling. All in all, it's a decent place with nice staff.

First of all I loved the staff. Everybody, starting from the reception through the dining room and cleaning staff were friendly, smiling and caring. The location of the hotel was amazing. Watching he sun rise and sun set from the armchair of the living room was a life experience. I found the facilities in the kitchen very helpful, it made my stay home like and I could cut my costs on meals. I liked the cleanliness of the place. The bathrooms were nice place to use. Thank you HI Montana staff, for making my stay so wonderful. You are ambassadors of Norway. You did perfect job.
I'm computer freak and I missed quicker wi-fi, but should beautifully located hostels be turned internet cafes. Forget about about my complaint !

The location is great for hiking, and only 15 away by bus to the city center. However, there is only one bus every 30mn and it cost 29kr.

there are big kitchen, living room and dinning, public space is large and homie.
you have to take bus no.12 between city centre and Montana, single trip costs 29 kr. but it's easy to find the way and bus schedule is available online and at the reception.

Location quite far away from the town center, you have to take the bus, which in Norway is quite an expense in itself. No wifi in the majority of the dorm rooms.
there are a lot of trips in the mountain nearby, there is a good kitchen in the hostel and a bus from the bus trminal (5 min from train staesion) to the hostel

More affordable than most options in Bergen, but that's not saying much at all. Clean. Nice view of the city from the back terrace area.
It's necessary to rent towels and sheets if you don't have your own, which costs as extra 70 KR per person. Add that into the bus fare to get up and back into town, and it is not as budget-friendly an option as I'd hoped.
The bed was quite good and comfortable with table and chair which is also necessary to put ur stuff. I stayed in 18-bed mixed Dormitory room with double-deck beds.
The kitchen was ok, but I couldn't find some utensils such as knife to cut vegetables, cutting board, opener. The shared WCs were not clean. They put a washbasin in the room, so people use it in early morning disturbing others. There are not enough sockets to charge your electronic devices. The hostel is located too far from the city center, so you have to pay for the bus 29 NOK one way.
A very unique location though very far from city centre so have to catch the last bus so can't stay out late. Great for those who's visiting to go hiking. Excellent views over the city from outside the hostel. Very quiet. Good internet access. Respectful guests and friendly staff; kitchen kept very clean.
The breakfast was not very good; no cooked food. We booked a room for two people which was very small and had a bunkbed. The top bunk was very hard to access as the entire bed was railed including the area directly above the ladder so was a pain to get up and down and definitly a hazard to the less mobile. The bathroom had a permanent scent of smelly feet. The room was otherwise very clean. Very pricey for a hostel.
- good location if you are driving - basic but clean and efficient - staff is there for you if you need them but not in your face - this is a backpacker's place not a hotel so be warned - quick and convenient wifi
- the mattress on the bed is dead uncomfortable and too thin - guess it's more a problem of Norway than the hostel but it's really not value for money
