It is not in a slum now. It is 50 meters from Selaron staircase, a famous landmark. It is a vibrant neighborhood, so maybe it's not ok for children -- I would... wat mensen zeggen » n't know. We're a reasonably young couple, and for us it was just perfect. Stuff are very helpful, they do speak English (I was prepared to resort to - Good location in Lapa, not far away from the Arcos da Lapa or Cinelandia station. A rather tidy room.   New Hostel only opened 5 months before so facilities are pristine condition. Stylish design, Staff wear casual but 'branded' tops. This is a classy joint in the 'cultural' area, don't be fooled by the aged outside appearance..the inside is superb. Great atmosphere, pool table, internet, sundeck, library..The best Hostel I've ever stayed in - Supercool hostel with really nice staff. We were two people staying there for 9 nights. We met awesome people and had a really great time. May be the best location you could get during the carnival! Easy to get to Copacabana and Ipanema Beach. The design there is also really cool! We really liked that it has pool table, bar, kitchen, barbeque area and always free toilets and showers. We´re def. Going back!

Internet worked, service in restaurants was perfect, front desk was very helpful, bellhops were helpful, price was great etc. - I loved location, staff was very friendly, rooms are big, spacious and modern.
