Ce que les gens disent
It's a jewel of faded glory, maybe in need of a little
refurbishment, but against that, Huge rooms with huge windows, a real
bath you can lie full length in, Crisp, spotless linens, a quaint,
clunky old lift, The lounge bar offers comfort and class, like a turn of
the century gentleman's club, leather arm chairs and old engravings
of naval battles and life at sea. The dining room is class - crystal
chandeliers, lofty moulded ceiling, white damask table cloths,
impeccably laid, an atmosphere of q. tous commentaires »
This is an old hotel built before the battle of Trafalgar. The room we stayed in was a huge room looking towards the Spinnaker Tower and a wonderful view of 'Warrior'. We had an excellent breakfast and were able to leave our vehicle in the car park whist visiting the Naval Dockyard just a hundred yards away. This is so convenient a location for Gunwharf Quays,Spinnaker Tower and the dockyard. The train station opposite also makes it the most convenient way to arrive if on a short stay.
No compl.
Friendly, helpful staff. Delicious breakfast. Lovely dining room.
Spacious room with view of hms warrier in the dockyard.
Great location for visiting the dockyard, mary rose, victory, etc., 2 mins walk.
Also Gunwarf keys with its shops and numerous cafes/bars/restaurants and beautiful views of the harbour area - especially on a warm sunny day.
It was a lovely old hotel - the decor was a bit dated. Needs a lot of money spending to bring it up to date but it was clean and comfortable.
We would s.
The hotel was ideally located opposite the train station. I travelled by train, my friend by car. The car park was adjacent to the hotel but the car was not used at all during our stay, everywhere was within walking distance. The Gunwharf shopping centre, where there is an abundance of restaurants is at the side of the station and the Historic Dockyard is at the other side of the station. Our room overlooked the HMS WArriior. It's position is ideal for a city break!.
The location, a few hundred yards from the Portsmouth Dockyard, brings
us back every year. We were able to recommend it to friends who were
travelling with us without reservation, as it is so convenient for the
rain and bus station as well as ferries. We love the big comfortable
rooms and the friendly welcome. Comparing notes after long days full of
activity in your comfortable lounge with bar facilities was a feature
of our stay.
Stylish old hotel not wrecked by "modernisation". Had a very large 2nd floor room, very comfortable with sofa, soft chair, huge dressing-table, very light with harbour view, large bathroom of 5-star size. Most of all, the staff were exceptional - kind, amusing, attentive and polite. If you want to be close to rail station and ferry terminal and the Tower, location is excellent. I thoroughly recommend this hotel.
Great location for both Gunwharf Quays and Historic Dockyard. We had a large room facing the harbourside - it was warm and comfortable. The breakfast room was lovely, the staff very attentive and breakfast were plentiful. The decor in places needed some attention including the bathroom but basically, we could not fault this hotel at all and will stay here again if we are in Portsmouth.
Rooms very spacious and spotless, my room faced the Spinakker Tower, absolutely amazing views
love the vintage decoration
staff very attentive and efficient (never had a English breakfast served in such a short time)
location is great, opposite rail station, taxis and a 24 h cafe
Nearby shopping centre and historic museums
We would choose this hotel again!.
I loved the character of the place - large rooms, old fashioned style, friendly staff. Location couldn't be bettered and the view from the window was fantastic, if I had had more time I could have spent a happy hour or two watching the ferries coming in and out, people arriving or departing on trains, and the Spinnaker and HMS Warrior complete the picture.
Fantastic location hotel room window facing harbour waterfront and HMS Warrior and the Spinnaker. Walked down the road to the Historic waterfront Museum area, and around corner to Gunwharf complex for cinema and shops. Very helpful reception staff, and really enjoyed historic feel and nature of hotel.Dining room spacious and food great.
This place is old, but alive and working, friendly and able staff.
I wish that I could have stayed longer. The lift didn't tell me which floor I was on and I had to open the door/gate myself- fantastic.
I asked for a room near to the lift with a harbour view and got both. The largest single room that I've ever stayed at in my years.
The staff, the breakfast, the location. Although the hotel looks nothing from the outside and the rooms are a little tired, they are big and regal, it is a great hotel to stay in. I have stayed there 4 times and have already booked my December stay. The rooms are cleaned every day fresh towels and even fresh soap. A great place.
The location is very good, it's within 200m of the historical dockyard entrance and like wise for a modern shopping complex and restaurants for the evening. There is also a train and bus station outside the front door of the hotel if you need to go further afield. Staff are also very friendly and helpful.
Excellent location - we were visiting the Historic Dockyard, Gunwharf Quays & the City Centre.
Friendly welcome at Reception.
Secure free parking.
Spacious rooms with views of the Harbour.
Excellent breakfast in a beautiful former ballroom.
The experience of visiting a wonderful historic building.
The Victory room was very large, a good view of the sea. Breakfast was
good and the location was excellent. The purpose of my visit was to go
into the dock yard to see the hms Victory, Mary Rose and hms Warrior. To
dine in Gun Wharf quay. All were very close. Also car parking provided
by the hotel.
Location is perfect--right across the street from the railway station, two blocks away from the Historic Dockyard, short walk to a few good restaurants near Gunwharf Quay. Old, quaint building with charming bar and breakfast room. Room was large with comfy bed, harbor view, and everything worked.
Polite, friendly and attentive staff made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. Our room was incredibly spacious and the beds very comfortable, clean, fresh linen and ample space in the bathroom. Breakfast service was very good, and the staff ever so polite and helpful.
Fantastic location with wonderful outlook from the front rooms. A really interesting hotel full of "decaying splendor" with helpful staff and one of the best breakfasts we have had at any location. All in all a very interesting comfortable stay which we would strongly recommend.
Excellent location and parking facilities. Nice large bedroom with harbour view. Very good breakfast and helpful, friendly staff. Certainly value for money. With some investment and its location adjacent to harbour, ferry, bus and rail station, there is great potential.
We arrived at sun set and the view from our third floor room of the harbour was stunning. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast excellent and served in a room full of history! Convenient for transport links and visits to the Historic Dock and Mary Rose Museum.
We had a slight problem with the heating in our room but it got sorted within 5 minutes of us inquiring about the problem. the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was a great start to the day! the bed was also very comfy and the shower was lovely and hot.
Just opposite train station P. Harbour, close to Historic Dockyard and
Shopping Center, 10-15 min walk from city center, spacious room, good
breakfast, nice staff. Proportionally cheaper than other accomodations
where I have been in this journey in England.
Decent price.
Great location close to historic docks, train station and gunwharf quays shopping centre.
Internet worked in the room despite not being guaranteed in room facilities.
Apparently breakfast is good but didn't get a chance to find out.
Hotel with character and excellent breakfasts. Ignore previous guests' comments about poor breakfasts - they were superb.
Location just two minutes from Portsmouth Harbour Station, Isle of Wight and Gosport Ferries. Can't get better than that.
The location right on The Hard is ideal for ferries to I o W, Gosport and Brittany. Adjacent to railway station and bus station. Staff very friendly and welcoming. An interesting old building. I had a large single room with a very good shower.
The location, close to trains buses, very good shopping centre.
Visiting the historical docks was just 2 minutes away, with pub next door offering good food. this was a ideal hotel to stay at.and enjoyed our stay very much will visit again.
Portsmouth is a great place to visit and the hotel is located very close to the main attraction seafaring attractions.
The hotel has welcoming reception, bar and dining areas. An antique lift to the rooms which are quite good with a view.
Very friendly staff. Also they have a car park which is free so that saves you a tenner. Literally 1 minutes walk to gun wharf where the main bars, shops and restaurants are. Excellent breakfast even had strawberries before my full English.
Excellent location within easy walking distance of Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth Harbour station and bus station, and Gunwharf Quays shopping area. Excellent breakfast including veggie sausages! Will definitely stay here again!.
Location. Only steps away from Naval Museum in one direction, and new shopping, entertainment, eating mall in other. Nice view of the "Victory" out front windows. Great breakfast, large room, modern bath. Friendly staff.
Good location for visiting the naval museum at Portsmouth. A very old stately hotel, built in 1774. Hotel could do with a make over as carpets ands curtains were very worn, but the bed linen was clean and fresh. Water was hot.
The staff were helpful, polite and friendly. The cleanliness was good and the breakfast was excellent. The building is in a good location and provides safe car parking. The building is old fashioned but has a certain charm.
Dining room & Breakfast, good bar did not use .Comfortable
bed,fridge in bedroom
found as we were leaving!!!very central for
the dock yard with Maryrose etc..Spinnaker tower opposite & an excellent
shopping center.
location was great. so much to do in surrounding area that we didnt use the car at all for the three days we were there. We had a very enjoyable stay at Keppels. There was only one slight prob(see 'what we didnt like').
very helpful staff. parking 2 doors up. across road from historic dockyard, ferry , train. good pub food next door. convenience store. xcllnt breakfast. we had a huge room. hotel is old but vry clean. great atmosphere.
Steeped in history, interesting location right by Mary Rose Museum and the Naval Dockyard, quirky nature of the establishment, and the gentlemanly staff added to the atmosphere. Enjoyed my stay, short as it was.
Very friendly, helpful staff.
Wonderful character.
Fabulous views from window.
Excellent breakfast.
Free parking.
Position - close to Hard, historic Dockyard, Spinnaker and Gunwharf shopping centre.
Historical atmosphere. Great view from Victory suite (including old sailor dummy looking out from balcony). Spacious rooms with period decor. Friendly helpful staff. Close to naval museum and ships.
We liked that it was so old and still working so well. It had a style of its own which was very good. The location was exactly where we wanted to be near new shops and near the old dockyard.
Excellent location . Friendly staff . Good size room with lovely view. Great parking fascilities . Good breakfast. Old hotel with original features , quirky and in keeping with the area .
A very old charming Hotel, it was like stepping into the past. The room was very spacious & comfortable, the staff was very helpful. Close to the Histroric Dockyard which suited us.
The welcome from staff, despite our lateness - friendly but reserved.
The view - we could see an old ship.
Huge room - we had a room at the front.
Bright breakfast room.
Secure parking.
Location - near Sea and the Portsmouth naval museums and the Victory. Pleasant service.
Had an elevator (some hotels don't). Quiet large room at back.
Convient off street free parking!.
For us , using the train , and wanting to go to the dockyard the location was fantastic. 200yards from dockyard, 200 yards from shopping mall with loads of restaurants and interest.
Superb location for all amenities, fantastic character Hotel . The best breakfast I have ever had. All staff so helpful, polite and eager to help.
Thank you will visit again.
Location, Breakfast and the friendly staff. Tha fact that it was Dog
friendly makes a huge difference as I am used to travelling in Europe
where most Hotels excet dogs.
The position was great for resturants, dockyard museum,
The rooms were old but large, very clean and helpful staff.
There was also free secure parking. Would stay again.
The large bedroom with the high ceiling decor and very comfortable bed. Beautiful furniture, drapes, wallpaper and couch made you feel as if youu were in a period home.
It is in a good position and easy access to the dockyard and gun wharf, the ferry and train etc, it also has parking facilities. The staff are friendly and helpful.
It is located in the best area for the Marina shopping and seconds away for the Historical Royal Navel Base. Staff are very friendly and the breakfast is very good.
There was nothing to dislike.
Only two of the three windows in the bedroom opened. The large centre
window was nailed closed. The early morning noise from the trains and
buses across from the hotel (to be expected when staying across from an
Interchange). Our travelling companions room. They had trouble with
their shower and toilet not working efficiently. However, the desk staff
quickly resolved the shower problem. Not sure about the toilet.
The room was tired -- but we only slept in it!.
Having to leave!.
There was nothing wrong with the hotel. What I don't like are people who whinge when they are staying in what is clearly visible on the website as a modestly-priced older place, and who then take delight in photographing old pipework or tiny faults (I saw none ) and posting them so as to unfairly discredit the place.
Nothing.
hotel need some refurbishment, for example curtains faded and carpet, however that was not important for me.
Although it was a good breakfast overall the scrambled eggs were tasteless.
Leaving, for me its like leaving a second home.
If staying here don't take any of the front rooms, the noise from the bus and rail terminals is terrible and if a light sleeper will not appreciate the constant noise even if the views from these rooms is fantastic.
We were very satisfied - we had read previous negative reviews & although the points relating to the shabbiness of the decor are accurate we still thought the hotel gave excellent value for money & enjoyed our stay,.
Mould growing on the ceiling of the bathroom, the toilet was very
difficult to flush and the shower was very poor. Generally the hotel is
in need of up-dating and re-decoration. The night manager was insulting.
Room and its carpet and furnishings showed alot of wear and tear. If peeling wallpaper turns you off, you won't be comfortable here.
Nothing.
Hotel looked "tired" and seriously needs some updating, particularly decoration and bathrooms.
Could do with a little redecoration of the staircase.
A little decadent. It would need some update.
Ancient decor.
Room smelt a bit like smoke and excessive airfreshner.
Window looked out onto fire exit.
No evening menu.
Nothing.
The decor is a little faded at the edges, but still an interesting old building.
nothing.
Bed mattress was a bit too soft.
Would have been nice to have a shower in the bathroom, rather than just a bath. Decor was a bit tired.
Directly across street from bus/ferry station and no a/c; however, noise abated by midnight. This hotel formerly was quite elegant and meals still served on china/ linen cloths, etc; however, don't stay here if you hate faded, worn furniture and flooring.
having said that it was a bit tired looking, wallpaper needs replacing, lift was ok could do with a coat of paint.
shower was very old fashioned and hard to use, needed to mop the floor after use as curtain was also broken.
Nothing really.
The decoration was in need of freshening up but it would be a major task which could result in a loss of the unique character of this old building.
One radiator in room was stuck on so room was a bit hot until weather cooled down.
The toilet was not the best but only minor .
Rooms could possibly do with a bit of a spruce up with decorating .
Nothing.
There was a used towel behind our bathroom door.
We had to leave too early to have a cooked breakfast and we do like kippers!.
Lift was rather old fashioned and difficult to close gates when you have suitcases.
nothing really, you got what you paid for.
Tremendous amount of charm and lovely lounge and dining room but
bedrooms urgent need of a facelift. Total decorating, new beds,
furniture and bathrooms.
Having to leave.
The bathroom has no shower, and the hotel could do with a makeover, and an updated lift.
