Set in the village of Heworth, this traditional pub is just half a mile from the medieval city walls and 15 minutes’ walk from York’s historic centre. It offers real ales, locally sourced full English breakfasts, and free parking. The bright rooms at Shoulder of Mutton all provide a TV and free tea and coffee in the room. Guests can make use of an en suite bathroom and a hairdryer. Hearty, home-cooked food is served in the pub, made using excellent Yorkshire ingredients. Guests can dine overlooking the beer garden, and children can enjoy the outdoor play area. The stunning Gothic design of York Minster is 15 minutes away on foot, while Jorvik Viking Centre can be reached in a 20-minute walk. The cobbled shopping of The Shambles is also 20 minutes away on foot.

The new managers had just taken over and had many issues to deal with. They made us feel very welcome and accomodated our needs well. The hotel needs some TLC but is comfortable and the rooms were adequate for the price. Overall, a nice place to stay near to the city (15 Min) walk or bus directly outside, generous parking area. it was very handy for the city, the rooms were clean and comfortable. there was ample free parking . the rates were very good . this is a very basic facility, but I would stay again. there was some road noise but I suspect they are in a conservation area so double glazing is not possible.

Easy-going attitude, quick reception-to-room service, spacious environment, good location. Good value, free parking & short stroll to town. Spacious Room and Bathroom at a good value price. Clean conditions and space in the room. everything. Proximity. The location. Bed comfortable. Friendly managers/owners who did everything they could to may our stay comfortable having only taken over the property the night before our stay. Bed very comfy. Comfortable room and easy walk from the city centre. Close to City Centre. The new managers were at the time unable to offer breakfast but are planning to do so anlong with other food in the near future. Water pressure is not the highest so the showers are a little slow. a few pictures in the room would help, the bath room was big enough for a bath which would have been great. there was no way of attracting staff in the nmorning before the pub opened. Power outage. shower (like many hotel showers) worked as per specification, but was under-powered. Impossible to get a forceful jet of water. Didn't change towels after first day. No Chair in the Room and there was Tea / Coffee ,Cups etc ,but no kettle. nothing. The owners were leaving at the end of the week so I wouldn't read too much into the down-sides. But it's the only B & B I stayed at where there was no breakfast. Could only take cash for payment. Played loud music (leaving party). Not being informed before our visit that due to a change in ownership/management they did not hold a food hygene certificate hence there were no facilities for providing breakfast and evening dining facilities. Bed and breakfast without the breakfast is missing an integral part. In fairness to the new people they did offer to go out and get us breakfast but it is not the same as a traditional english fry up. No kettle to much bad lanuguge at the bar downstairs. Enterprise Inns were in the middle of a tennancy move so service was poor, didnt really know who was running place had to ask a few times for things for room, wouldnt recommed it to anyone. No food at all Please be aware that despite all descriptions/websites the pub is currently doing no food at all including breakfasts!! And when we arrived no apology for that!! Quite noisy bar at night although noise died down by 12.30. Bit of a kid's pub on a Saturday night. Rooms were cold as no heating in the mornings; floors not hoovered or rooms cleaned properly; drinks equipment missing ie; cups, kettle, spoons etc. Was expensive for a small twin room considering lack of amenities and no breakfast.
