Rich in original character and traditional charm, this cosy 19th-century country inn offers good beers, great-value food and comfortable en suite rooms in the converted former stable block.
Originally built in 1866, the Duke of Wellington was once a working farm and an inn for drovers. Traditionally built from Derbyshire limestone, the pub has a slate roof, roaring log fires and extensive gardens. Free wireless internet access is available in the bar.
There are 9 en suite rooms in the beautifully converted stable block. Set away from the main building, the rooms offer comfort and privacy. The stable block has its own flagstone courtyard and free private parking is available on site. All rooms have TVs and tea/coffee making facilities.
Recently redecorated in a traditional country style, the inn boasts extensive floral gardens with comfortable seating areas. There is also a fully enclosed and heated patio area, overlooking Riber Castle and the Derwent Valley.

Location was great, although at top of town up steep hills. But beautiful views
and though being a pub was very peaceful.Good location to get around elsewher in the Peaks and not too far from many attractions.
The warm welcome and friendly staff. The cosy room allocated even though a little bit of a squeeze between bed and unit was very comfortable Lovely hot shower! The privacy of the room.
Very nice quiet room. Easy access to the town. Good breakfast in the pub the following morning. Mostly friendly staff, but we did wait at the bar to check in for some time.
Staff very friendly. Asked for quiet room, was given one to the rear, away from road and pub. comfortable bed, parking near room. Will definitely go back.
Helpful and friendly staff, convenient, quiet location rooms away from the pub part of the building.
Good pub atmosphere, room was clean, bright and airy. Close to town and had heaps of parking.
Good location, VFM, stone walled bedroom block separated from noise of pub.
the hotel and staff wher the best i have seen anyware.
We were with a re-union party. Parking was good.
friendly staff, polite clientel, very clean.
Excellent location, good breakfast and bar.
Great Location
Good Rooms
Excellent Staff.
The bar man was particularly helpful.
Staff, location, the pub, ambience.
the pub / the staff / the food.
Very good value for money.
very good value for money.
It was easy to find.
extremely friendly.
Location.
Had a one nights stay in March, lovely pub part, open fires, very friendly staff and clean rooms x.
The bed was comfy. The toilet was good also the shower. The food was nice and good value.
Bed was warm and comfy, view was amazing and easy access to town and walking.
Made very welcome. Food good. We liked the rooms in the converted outhouses.
The privacy of the rooms . The food in the main bar.
Beds were clean but rest of room could do with a good clean. Bathroom dirty and needs renewing. Its a good job the bedding was clean otherwise I wouldn't have stayed there! Breakfast was very good and plenty of it, the Pub seems run down and could also do with updating and a good clean. Don't know who runs the place but the lady who booked us in etc wasn't very welcoming or friendly! Wouldn't stay there again.
Friendly welcome and staff, although appeared to be understaffed at the time of our visit. Close to Matlock, and the hotel is well situated for exploring the area. Car parking within easy reach of the accommodation. Clean linen and towels and the room was warm.
The location was the best thing about the stay. The retired cleaner was
the most friendly person at the Inn,he was very friendly and helpfull.
Carpark was near to room and breakfast was ok. Would definitely not
recommend room to anyone.
It was quiet; the standard of the cooked breakfast was good.
The Pub itself is quite nice.
The outside accommodation was good if you was coming in and out at
early hours.
Nothing everything was superb.
Noone was there to greet us when we arrived.
The key to our room kept sticking and wouldn't open the door.... Was very annoying as it rained and we were struggling in the rain.
The waitress did not keep the breakfast food stocked and disappeared for long periods of time. The glasses were dirty. Standards need to be raised and once this is achieved more travellers will return.
As a vegetarian not enough choice on main menu in pub or enough choice on breakfast menu - not everybody likes a fry up! (but egg on toast made a pleasant change to normal breakfasts offered!).
On arrival staff did not inform us that the pub stopped serving food at 6pm. They did advise us on other places to eat, however we really wanted to eat at this pub. Slightly springy matresses in room 2 twin room, a little uncomfy, but ok for 1 night.
Nothing.
Didn't seem completely prepared for us at breakfast but fine when it came - good job we were not in a hurry!.
The separate room was fine until taken over by a bunch of sports fans.
The menu had changed from the time we were asked to order several
weeks before.
poor choice of ales which were not local.
During our trip renovation work was underway, which resulted in the hotel not being open until 17.00 and no evening meals being served.
Heating was a little temperamental.
nowhere to hang clothes, no mirror over table for woman.
limited facilities in room, i.e. tiny mirror that was hard to access, no bedside tables, no instructions to work the TV/Sky Box.
room had mildew around the entrance door which needs attention otherwise very clean and tidy.
Was a bit far out of town and if you didn't have your own transport it would be hard to get into town.
nothing.
The bed was uncomfortable :-(.
The room lacked seating and was very tired looking. Our room showed a lot of dampness but was cleanish.
Room had mold and bits unpainted, not much variety on breakfast which wasn't included in the price and full English was greasy.
Bathroom tatty and needed redecoration. It was a very hot night, room quite airless. Needed at least a fan.
The bathroom wasn't very welcoming . The shower head wouldn't stay on the rail . And even though I put a dirty towel in the shower cubicle this was re folded & put back on the rail !!!.
It was run down and the bathroom was horrible needs updating and a good clean!.
Limited choice for breakfast, i.e. no fruit or yoghurt, but the 'full English' was well cooked and presented.
The room was showing signs of damp ingress, and would benefit from re-decoration and general updating.
Room not very clean. Staff not very helpfull or friendly apart from the
cleaner, would not go back. With a bit more thought and cleanliness this
place could be very good, what a shame...........
Mildew around doors. Corners had not been cleaned. Bathroom was in need
of a good clean. Dirty behind base of toilet. Generally mildew could
have been wiped and painted every now and again if they had a problem
but it was just left to get worse. Behind the bed had not been cleaned
for some time. Room very basic. Have stayed in better places for the
same price.
There were only sachets of coffee and teabags available at breakfast, and white bread. The room lacked any seating or proper clothes hanging facilities. The walls were stained. The price was excessive for the facilities on offer & the overall standard; further, the breakfast was an additional charge.
The bedroom was very basic.
Booked the hotel to have a country pub with food and relaxation. When we turned up they weren't serving food. Wish that had been indicated on the website, as I would have selected another venue instead.
The staff wasn't helpfull. The bed was uncomfy. The shower was
perthetic. The door into the room was drafty. And no matter what time
you tried to get food you never could. You was told the kitchen
wasn't open during the day and then as you walked round the corner a
waitress was sat eating a meal.
