The owners Gavin and Wendy were very friendly and available for any assistance. The price was very reasonable for the apartment which was large, roomy and had all the luxuries of home; gas stove, fridge, full set of cooking utensils, tv and spacious bedrooms. If you want to be near the beach and hear the calming surf, this is the place to be. The apartment was a great value and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The TV channels are best I've seen in NZ, paying a little extra for a sea view room is a must, and the free WiFi is definitely a bonus. Dunedin is quite a boring town, but the very remote beach at Sandfly Bay, 20 mins by car was well worth the visit. The views from the front of this hotel are magnificent. The ambiance and the retro design of the building is just wonderful. The location is excellent, close to the beach and restaurants/bars. Is also on the bus route into the city. Gavin, the owner, was extremely friendly and helpful. He even helped us carry our bags upstairs to our top floor room. Secure location to leave our extra luggage in was much appreciated. The two bedroom apartment my family started in was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and warm. The water pressure in the shower was amazing and the kitchen well equipment. Management and staff were very friendly. Being by the beach and within five minutes to the malls made this the perfect location for our teenagers. Would have loved to stay longer. Love the decor of the whole apartment, so modern and classy. Love the quiet location that is away from the busy town centre. Gavin, the owner of the apartment is a wonderful guy who helped us get our laundry washed and delivered to our apartment while we are out having fun. Will stay there again if we ever return back to Dunedin. I enjoyed every moment of my stay. The staff were so amazing and helpful with every and anything you may need. The views were absolutely breath taking. The newspaper at our door every morning was a nice touch. I would definitely stay here the next time I am in Dunedin and will be recommending it to all my friends and family. Very homely and comfortable place to stay. The views of the ocean were incredible. If you are looking to be close to downtown Dunedin, St. Clair is about 4 miles away. We had a car but you could also take a bus. It's quite a distance from the centre, but the St. Clair bus service takes 10 mins from the Octagon is just $3.40 (£2) which stops at the hotel door. On my check out Wendy was able to call me a taxi, which was greatly appreciated. There was a constant noise from the surf that was unexpected. Although the weather was bad and the sea swell was quite large. Minimal provisions provided in unit. For that price there were no tissues, no shampoo, one small soap). Steps up to front door and to some of the apartments would not suit anyone with a disability. The windows were a little noisy with rattling in the wind. Some may not like the distance into Dunedin, but that is what I loved about this location. No elevator. Older facility. There is no shower base, with the shower in the centre of the bathroom with a sloped floor. The result is that showering makes the bathroom very wet. That being said, it was a lovely shower. There are meant to be parking bays but they are so small that we were too scared to park the hire car in them. Fairly pricey but that would be the only down fall. Old style bathroom and apartments need better noise insulation. The bus stop outside our room! Very unfortunate that they idle there for 10mins or so at night.(I know the owners have no control over this, but its the only thing I didn't like about the place). there was no lift which was very difficult for elderly parents we were put on the 3rd floor 63 steps from the street. Toilet in the one bathroom a bit inconvenient and no vanity around the small basin to put toiletaries and makeup etc. No mirror in the 2nd bedroom a pain. Nothing. Layout of apartment odd. The 62 stairs to get to the top floor (no lift). The garage parking was somewhat tight but totally adequate. Nothing. Nothing, stairs may be a problem for some, but you get help with your luggage. No elevators, not good news for travelers with heavy luggage staying on the third floor. However, the owner offered to help carry our luggage to the room, which was quite considerate and appreciated. Stairs, stairs, stairs! No elevators, but the staff did carry up our luggage the 3 floors. Need egg cups and champayne glasses.
