Behind its historic traditional façade, the George Hotel has a wonderful recently renovated ballroom and a colourful rear garden with a small island in the River Tees. You can relax outdoors in the gardens and on the decking and watch the river pass you by as you enjoy a drink.

Many of the hotel’s rooms have recently been entirely renovated. Each of the en suite rooms offers excellent accommodation and good value for money.

helpful, pleasant staff, good, freshly cooked breakfast, killer views over river, open fires in bar, comfortable refurbished rooms, just looking for an excuse to go back. As you will see from earlier reviews refurbishment is ongoing, however bar, reception, breakfast/dining room and bedrooms are complete. Still some work in progress, and finishing touches to be completed but a great find. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the room fantastic, well appointed and clean. Breakfast in the morning was marvelous and three log burning fires on the go. This was one of the best hotels I have stayed in and can highly recommend it, a great experience all round.

Good food reasonably priced and lovely location for exploring the locality. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the hotel. The room was very comfortable and recently refurbished. Staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. Breakfasts very filling. Could not fault it. Wonderful location.The room was nicely decorated, comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was very good and you even get a fantastic view out of the windows. To top it off the hotel was excellent value for money. The George is a wonderful hotel, we have stopped there before, love the location, open fires and the food especially the breakfasts. Great location, lovely rooms, great food and bar. Very dirty area around radiator and skirting, a shame when the hotel has been so beatifully refurbished. Shower not brilliant, Lots of noise coming through from upper floor. No room service. Restaurant rather cold, especially during breakfast.as above but we realised the hotel was going through refurbishment and made allowances. this wouldnt put us off booking the george again. No bath in room. Room floorboards very creaky. No WIFI in room.poorly fitted doors to most rooms....large gap to the bottom of most doors allowing noise and less privacy. Power points in room inaccessable for any one with restricted mobility. I suggested a power point at table hight for the kettle. I had to move the TV to get at the socket and place the kettle on the floor to boil???. The only strange thing was that the kettle cord wasn't long enough to reach the plug so you had to put the kettle under the desk on the floor. Not really a problem though. Positioning of plugs in the room was awkward for use of kettle.room was too dark / gloomy it needs more light, and on arrival was cold, despite the radiator being on full. a very small kettle and electrical sockets not near the kettle. The bar and reception area was undergoing renovation when I stayed there. This was not a problem because the staff made do very well under the circumstances. However, it would be wise to inform guests about in advance about the renovation. Some inexperience in restaurant and billing at check out was experienced.
