A 5-minute walk from Ambleside and a mile from Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, this charming guest house was originally 2 separate Victorian cottages. It specialises in home-cooked food and offers free Wi-Fi and free parking on site. Haven Cottage still retains traditional old features like wooden beams and feature fireplaces. Most rooms benefit from picturesque mountain views, and all feature a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is provided each morning, made with Cumberland sausage or vegetarian sausage, lightly smoked dry-cured bacon, and other locally sourced ingredients. A number of scenic walking routes start from Haven Cottage, and cycle storage is provided if guests wish to bring their bicycle. The market town of Keswick is a 20-minute drive away.

From the welcoming tea and cake to a heartfelt goodbye from Tim, one of the two owners - more like hosts than proprietors - everything was first rate. The superior room we booked overlooked gardens and a park which we could view from the large windows or from the deck attached to the room. The spacious and very comfortable room had an enormous bathroom, worth a stay just for it. The two most pleasant staff members could not do enough to please. If going to the Lakes, forget about Windermere .
all reviews » We stayed in room 8 and it was just as amazing as the pictures we saw on here. Huge walk in shower and free standing bath tub. Very comfortable bed and astonishing view from the private balcony. Tim and his staff were very welcoming and attentive. Jake the dog was adorable. The cottage itself is very homely and we felt very comfortable during our 3 day stay. Breakfast was fantastic, all locally sourced produce. The black pudding was outstanding. Location was great and its nice and quiet. Will d. The staff were really helpful and efficient. We turned up 3 hours early and they pushed our room forward in the list so we could get our bags etc in the room. The view from the back was lovely and there was a nice garden area where you could enjoy the views. Breakfast was also v well prepared and a couple games are presented to you for entertainment. Little add on, but they all count. Very clean and homely, mrs said she could live there. Finally Tim, if you meet him you'll know what I mean. We liked everything about Haven Cottage, to the warm welcome from Tim & Jake (the dog), the very welcome afternoon tea and cake, to the small but spotlessly clean room. At breakfast we loved the puzzles on the tables - and the breakfast (served by the very friendly Christina) was delicious. The vegetarian sausage was so tasty, and we enjoyed a "confused" breakfast of veggie sausage and bacon & egg. Really a very lovely stay. Thank you. We had various ages in our party. All were made very welcome. Liked the sense of comfort and home plus the firendly banter. Food absolutely delicious and served beautifully by staff member. Haven cottage ideal base for Ambleside and touring the lakes. Also has parking which is great. Everything to make you want to go back as many people obviously do. We will be joining the returning throng and wish Lindsey, Tim and the staff continued success. Everything about this B&B was great - excellent location, wonderful hospitality and service, beautiful room (room 6) and delicious breakfast. The highlights for us were the tea and cakes on arrival, the friendliness of the owner and staff, the home made biscuits in the room and the puzzles at breakfast! We loved everything about our stay at Haven Cottage and really couldn't fault it. Staff members were amazing, Tim is an excellent host and the extra special touch with the old-style games was a pleasant surprise. Room 6 is to die for, absolutely spotless and so comfy-- I mean it has a huge bathtub in the bedroom, what more can you ask for? :) Breakfast was superb and we will certainly come back. I had a very enjoyable stay at Haven Cottage. The owners/staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and room 5 was very comfortable, clean and cosy. Very well placed and close to a variety of good restaurants like the Glass House and Dodds. everything - the whole place was wonderful, cake and coffee on arrival, gorgeous room, fantastic bath, bedroom, balcony and facilities - breakfast was great too. Will stay again... and Ambleside is a perfect place to be near for food shops and bars as well as a lovely walk to the lake. It is the best stay among all the hotels I've been to, including 4&5 stars. Staff are great, dog is lovely, designs are amazing, details are considerate. The piles of almost 40 year old copies of equestrian magazines were brilliant. Our room was lovely. Breakfast was wonderful and the lounge was so comfortable. It was damp and cold outside when we were there but the house was so warm. The breakfast and Christina....although the owner Tim was very hospitable, I think he needs a new joke book! Ha! I knew before we went that there weren't curtains at the large window in room 8 but I would probably have preferred to have them. The bed was a little lumpy (not horrible, but not the best per my personal taste). Our room was near the road which is a little noisy until later at night. The steep flights of stairs to our top-floor room have no railing on one section, which gave me some difficulty. Most people would not have trouble but I have some mobility challenges. For the same reason, while the location is lovely, it is too far for me to walk to town, so depending on your preference, that can be a plus or a minus. Nothing not to like. Nothing. Nothing, everything was perfect. N/A. Steep narrow stairs, very awkward to carry luggage up and down. I could not find the code for Wi Fi connection, had to wait until the morning to get the code as the hosts were not on the premises. Small car park. Bigger TV would have been good but who wants to watch TV anyway! :). The bedrooms are up narrow twisty stairs - don't take too much luggage!. Steep, narrow steps to room but the staff was very helpful and made it doable. Not so keen on the bath being in the bedroom in room 4 (just a personal thing). nothing. nothing. Absolutely nothing to dislike. The only fault was that there was no where in the room to sit comfortably but there was ample comfortable seating in the lounge that more than made up for it. It certainly wouldn't stop me from booking again and indeed my husband has booked us in for December for our wedding anniversary. There was nothing to dislike. The heater was not keep on long enough at night, which made the room freezeing in the morning until 7:30am. May appear a small item but being informed on check out that the balance settlement must be in cash was slightly unexpected. Very small car park, not easy to negotiate. Nothing. Nothing.
