The Hotel Plaza De Armas was the perfect location for exploring Old San Juan! The free trolley stops right at the door and the cruise and ferry docks are an easy walk away. There are many restaurants close by and the streets are safe and interesting for wandering. The building is 200 years old, and the elevator dates from the 1930's so I would describe the hotel as "quirky". We stayed in a "king suite" on the front of the hotel with two balconies overlooking the plaza and you could see the harb.
all reviews » Nice, OLD, OLD hotel in the heart of Old San Juan. Within walking distance to many of the things to see and a fairly short taxi ride to the airport and cruise port for Celebrity Cruises. Other cruise terminals are even closer. The hotel had no special attractions other than old world charm, good location and GREAT staff. Luis Garzon was especially helpful with directions, restaurants, tour trolleys and using the antiquated elevator -- when it worked. When it broke down, hotel staff was quick. I liked everything! the staff couldn'T do enough for me and especially for it'S manager..."luis"....he was just great. and yes you couldn'T ask for A better location because as far as I was concerned....I was centrally located in the old city for just about everything. just A 15 min. walk to the waterfront....and A nice comfortable walk to the forts! would stay there in A blink of an eye....so to speak. - The location is excellent, right in the middle of Old San Juan, super close to the ships dock. - 5 minutes walk to El Morro and San Cristobal Castle. - No parking on site, but you can use La Puntilla or Doña Fela. - Ice and vending machines on premises - Super friendly and helpful staff - A lot of food/drink places around as well as Walgreens across the street and a CVS 5 minutes walk. The reception was great and the room was clean. The location was excellent, right in the center of Old San Juan, and exactly in front of the stop taxy. Also proved very honest because despite having lost an overnight stay due to flight delay, they made up for a free night although it was not their fault. Location. This hotel is located in the west middle of old San Juan. Close to coast, forts, food, sights, casinos, etc. Good location. Everything is within easy walking distance. This was a very affordable hotel - room was fine for the money... it was clean (not new) and maintained. Nice helpful staff. We were lucky that there was a spare room with windows and a balcony so we were able to upgrade from our windowless room to something a lot more comfortable for us. This older building doesn't have too many electrical outlets and we found that without the cord we had packed for our cruise we couldn't plug in the refrigerator and one lamp and recharge our electronics at the same time. Wireless is available free, but you will probably have to go to the lobby for it. There is a "poetry cafe" just across the plaza with good wireless access for free. Our room faced the street, so we heard the early morning deliveries to nearby stores. Lone elevator broke down. liked everything!. Really old and slow elevator. It's better to use the stairs, but it's understandable since it's a really old structure. ok, our only comment is that the air conditioning unit was VERY loud... gee whiz This needs to be corrected... I wore an earplug and it was ok ;). We didn't pay extra for a window room. So it took some getting used too not seeing daylight. We would still rent the same room, however. Rooms are small. Most don't have windows. No food service except for a few vending machines. There is no dedicated parking so you must park on-street which is a challenge. Otherwise, there is a municipal parking lot 4 blocks away. The air conditioning clicked on and off continuously. We just turned it off finally. no potable water, but that's common. For the price, it was fine and just what I expected, so I wouldn't say I didn't like anything. The front looks abandoned. I guess there use to be a restaurant, but for now the window fronts are empty and you could walk right by and not even know it was a hotel. They could provide coffee in the lobby area. A little noisy at night... No cable on old tv . Flashing light from blower. Slow inefficient elevator. No complaints but a nicer lounge and food service would be a plus. Elevator; hotel badly needs some cosmetic TLC. One thing little problem was bathroom shower tht all and no refrigerator free breakfast but it was ok. no amenities. An extremely slow elevator, and a very ugly entrance (could you not put something in those two windows other than delapidated rfixtures ?). Dresser drawers broken, no windows in room. Hotel overcharged me for airport taxi pickup.(premium over regular fare.). Can be noisey due to the centre location. slow elevator lol. The elevator. no bar no restruant no outside room sitting area. Bad cell reception in room. No windows. safe non functioning initially no keys for shutters on window to balcony very noisy air conditioner. The very slow elevator. The air condition system. the non existence of window in the room. the room we stayed in needed an overall in cleaniness. Noise due to the AC in the room every 5 minutes on and off, horrible elevator,for one person and a little luggage only, Horrible stairs, too narrow and almost vertical, and bad customer service.
