What people say
We spent 1 night in the hotel/Ryokan. Really nice to stay in quite a traditional accommodation. The staff spoke fair English, by Japanese standards. Was very cute that my name was up on a welcome sign and next to my shoe spot.
We used the private bath as we have tattoos, which was fun, but we had to put the cold tap on for a bit first as it was boiling water!
They provided us with useful maps and restaurant information upon arrival.
The Japanese breakfast was a good experience, although I didn. all reviews »
When we checked in, we though that we will have a room with a bathroom.
Nope! It has only toilet. And we needed to use hotel's common bath.
It turned out to be a very good experience using Japanese common bath.
It is very clean and very relaxing in hot tub.
My second favorite is Japanese gourmet, both dinner and breakfast. They are big meal, I must say. They serve a local specialty called Yuba, which are dishes made from Tofu. Not bad at all. If I have a chance to come to Nikko again, this is t.
The staff at Nikko Tokanso was so wonderful and helpful! On the way to the onsen I slipped and injured my foot. I had to go to hospital. When I asked them to call me a taxi they offered to bring me with their limousine. They also brought me back to the hotel, the and on the next morning they took me to the hospital for the check- up and then to the train station. When they saw that I wasn't able to go up the stairs they moved my room to the ground floor and on the next morning they rought me .
Simple ryokan, more like a youth hostel, located near the shrines but far from the main street with all meal options. The furniture was old and injured, but the room - big and clean. Private bath was more a bathtub together with laundry machines, not so pleasant. The breakfast was good and for reasonable price. Reception lady was very friendly and helpful, trying her best to give all needed information. The second team was much less effective. We knew from letsbookhotel.com reviews that they of.
This is a wonderful Ryokan experience, very traditional Japanese style.
The staffs and the lady boss are helpful and friendly, even they are not
fluent in English but they are trying their best to explain everything.
The rooms are very clean, and the futons are comfortable. Nice view in
the snow. The Japanese style breakfast was good. There is free coffee
and tea in the lobby. The ryokan was also just a few minutes walk from
the main world heritage site in Nikko. Lady boss is kind and we're
off.
This is a steal in Nikko. The location is perfect, not far from the station and they have shuttle bus from and to the stat complemented with drinksion. The room is large and lovely. The staff are all very polite and welcome. Dinner and breakfast were served in our own room. The dinner was a true deal, a delicious multi-course dinner with drinks for only 3000 yen. The onset is great, especially the outdoor pool. We felt so lucky to have stayed there. I will definitely stay t this place again if .
This is a true ryokan with an in-house onsen. Someone comes in at night to turn down your japanese-style tatami room and put the foutons out.
I have tattoos all over the place and went into the onsen when it was pretty empty late at night (closes at 1am) with no problems at all.
The hotel the closest to the main temples area.
Lobby with WiFi and a myriad of trinkets and sweets to buy.
A very genuine experience without the "made for tourists" vibe.
The hotel was really nice and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful
but lacked English speaking skills, with the exception of one lady. The
hotel is not that close to the town, but it is close to the temples,
which is the main reason for being in Nikko I believe. Furthermore we
were collected by staff of the hotel when we arrived at Nikko jr
station and dropped off for our train when we departed, so this was a
nice touch.
Friendly and helpful staffs. We didn't book for pick up because we were not sure about the time. We ended up went on the wrong bus. After called Nikko Tokanso to ask for direction, they came to pick us up in 10 minutes. Good onsen and nice room. It was warm and comfortable inside the room. Great location. We walked to Toshogu shrine after breakfast. Overall, we had a very good stay over there. Thank you!.
The Japanese room we stayed in was spacious, which is a real plus for our family. The refreshments provided in the room are also fabulous. Overall, the building is a bit old, but the facilities are pretty clean and neat, such as the dining room and onsen. The meals are very tasty and comes in reasonably large portions. Hotel is very near Shinkyo bus stop once you know the surroundings.
The staff was amazing; very accommodating and family friendly. At
check-in they pointed us to all the different sights in the area
(and a discounted 'combo' ticket) to keep us occupied until
the room was ready. Typical Japanese ryokan with onsen (public
bath). Very reasonably priced and fantastic location (5 minute walk
to Toshogu Shrine).
vey kind hosts, it was no problem at all that English skills were limited; try the japanese dinner, which was served in our case in the traditional way in our room. Very close to all sights; close to bus station to go to the lakes; try the onsen, it was our first one so I cannot rank it but it was nice.
Amazing and very accommodating staff. Wonderful Onsen with a shower facility in it also for western cultures. Spacious room, amazing traditional food and very close to all of the main attractions in Nikko. Good price for the region, for the service and the facilities.
This Japanese style Ryokan was excellent. It was only 5 min away from
Nikko temples. Staff were very helpful. Onsen bath was recently
refurbished. Other than the smoking issue I mentioned, this Ryokan is
excellent. I would like to go and visit this Ryokan again.
The staffs are very friendly and warm welcome. They are very attentive
in details such as the customer name sign for shoes shelf, front of the
room. When my shoes are wet, they dry them suddenly when we come in.
Thanks for your warm welcome.
I stayed with this hotel for 2 nights and i can say that it is the best hotel during my japan trip. I also stayed with other hotels which is more expensive than tokanso. But this hotel is the best . Very good service minded staff.
Nikko Tokanso was a wonderful surprise! Such excellent service, delicious & reasonable breakfasts & dinners, and a small but reasonable gift shop. Public bath was traditional onsen. Very close to Toshogu Shrine.
Friendly, helpful staff complimentary transfer from/to train station
nice breakfast for a decent price
new onsen bath
everything clean
little shop in the lobby
spacious Japanese style room
free W-Lan in the lobby area.
Close to temples (5-10 min walk to Toshogu)
Staff were very helpful and lent us an umbrella when it was pouring rain!
Facilities were great
Authentic ryokan experience, including outdoor onsen, for a great price.
The lady who runs the inn is extremely helpful. Outdoor onsen and
Japanese style room setting are good experience. Free Shuttle makes easy
transfer to station. Locate few minutes from temples.
Japanese comfort.
The brand new onsen opened from 4:00 am to 01:00 (21 hours each day).
The friendly staff trying to meet your needs and trying their best to make your stay enjoyable.
The hospitality is great. Even they write your name on the shoe rack and the experience of a traditional japanese house complete with tatami is superb. highly recommended.
Lovely Ryokan in a magic place. Did not eat at the hotel so cant comment. The hotel is on the top of a hill so might not suit everyone. Strongly recommend this place.
Located right next to the historic sites.
We were offered a ride to the station after checking out.
Great main hall with lounge, free coffee and souvenir shop.
Located next to unesco heritage makes visiting them extremely easy. Near most nature attractions is another plus point. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Very friendly personnel. Great to experience the Japanse culture, which
is clearly explained. Good shuttle service from and to the station.
Very close to the shrines and temples, staff were very helpful (although their English was limited), a fantastic budget ryokan experience.
Very close to the shrines / temples
Very reasonable price
Extremely helpful staff
Free shuttle to / from JR station.
Perfect location close to the shrines, friendly staff (although limited
English), nice onsen, good Japanese dinner.
Lovely to experience a traditional Japanese building and meals including an onsen without breaking the bank.
Great location near the main temples, spacious rooms and friendly service. Also has a good onset.
Beautiful ryokan with great baths, spacious and luxurious rooms and lovely setting.
everything is good for ryokan and it has public bath too. Good one as well.
Friendly staff although lacking English.
Excellent onsen. Nice room.
Very helpfull staff
Near Toshogu shrine
Onsen is good relaxation.
Good value for money, totally new hot bath, clean, nice staff!.
Close to Toshogu and other sights. Nice Onsen. Helpful staff.
Extremely nice dinner, the outdoor bath was very nice.
Onsen, family onsen close to cultural places.
staff very friendly.
Quite a nice scene and environment and I have a best experienced for ryokan.
Bed was very hard, even by Asian standard, my partner has a bad back so suits him, but a little bit much for me.
They had no lift/elevator, which is hard when someone has a back problem and heavy cases.
Smoking smell in the room on the first night. After we open some windows
and slept through the night. Next day, smell was gone.
The way to the onsen is super slippery. When you wear the hotel's own slippers you might be just as unlucky as I was and fall. They should cover the floor with either wood or some anti-slipping mat.
The rooms are super genuine but a tad worn out. Still, does not detract from the overall amazing experience.
Difficult communicating with staff at hotel as only one spoke
English with us.
There were no yukata for kids. Though it was nothing major since kids got to stay there free of charge.
The hotel location is hard to find for the first time, and all the roads are uphills. Air circulation could be bad for some tatami rooms even with windows open. Wifi is accessible in the lobby only.
Wish we could have eaten meals in our room as this is our family's
favorite part of staying at a ryokan (save the onsen). The powder room
appliances / carpet was dated and worn. All in all very minor and
nit-picky complaints.
Smoking area is situated in a main lounge, it was just one of the tables
in the lounge with an ash tray. There is no special extractor/fan
for smoke. Our room was close to the smoking table.
Tv a bit small screen. The common sink which locate out of the room is
a bit old.
Hotel is quite old but you can feel the real ryokan.
Just be mindful that the walk up to the ryokan from the bus stop is uphill.
No many that I can think of; maybe no wifi in the rooms?!.
The lobby - very old fashioned and kitsch.
The public bath is not our taste. But luckily they do have one shower with curtain.
Nikko is lovely, but restaurants close very early, between 18.00-19.00.
Wifi was not available in guest room.
The 'futon' was quite thin, we found it hard to have a really
good sleep on it.
In our room one chairs was quite used, smell in the hall was strange.
hard to find the place and something to eat around there, but close to the temples.
The hotel is a bit rundown.
Confusing instructions on the towels. There is a basket for depositing
the used towels in the change room, but, apparently the instruction is
for the day users only and not for the ryokan guests. Everything in town
closed early evening hence very limited dining choices.
The room was slightly old.
You have to get a bus to get here from the train station but that's not that bad.
A bit hard to find from the train station, need to take a taxi or call for the hotel shuttle.
300 Yen Onsen Bath tax was added to the bill on check-out, but there was no mention of this before hand.
I hope the staffs in these hotel can improve their english speaking as hard to communicate with them.
