Very clean and comfortable hotel. Rooms are spacious and clean. The staff is very friendly. Location is in the town centre, so walking distance to restaurants and shops. Short driving distance to golden gate national park. Location and views of the mountains. Built to fit in with the rustic atmosphere of Clarens. Shower a good size. King size bed was very comfortable. Specially during these cold winter nights..the fireplaces in the dining and bar areas creates that "cozy" feeling we all love during these times.

Description of the dessert menu at the restaurant is not what you get. Our room was entered and cleaned when the "Do Not Disturb" tab was displayed on the door. The trap door in the toilet made a noise when you opened the toilet door. The food was poor for 4 star. I ordered a ploughmans platter with 'cured' meat, and was presented with sandwich ham. Shower water not warm enough. Water leaks in passage. Limited covered parking. We struggled with service during the Dinner on Friday night 29 March. Service was slow. We actually want to have a calm slow dinner, but the attendance of the waiter was poor. I had to stand up a few times to organise service. rooms is nor sound proof from street noises. N/A. the breakfast. Aircon very noisy. Chair by dressing table far to low "maybe suitable for a giraffe".Lol.... No Bath Rooms designed for one not two e.g.one chair. showers could do with a deep clean no additional blanket available. No protected place for smokers to smoke especially during cold days or nights. We did not get wake-up calls two days in a row..... no explanation.... the restaurant was not up to standard. The quality of the food could be stepped up. Water pressure in shower (R00m 124) was very low (pathetic) hole in curtain voil & the breakfast on Saturday morning appeared to contain several left-overs that looked rather "old" . Sunday breakfast presentation was fine and all looked fresh. Staff on floor very reactive. Worked in lounge area and had to keep on requesting service - no pro-active checking up on refreshment needs. Breakfast! Unfortunately it was highly disorganized, the food was average as not to say almost mediocre and over crowded. It seems there was a crisis this Sunday morning due to a wedding and a soccer team. However the hotel should be able to cater for larger group. It spoiled our stay since breakfast is a very important part of a stay! A pity. the dirty linen - stained and dusty. I was bittten by bed bugs while i was there!.

Tambo International airport in Johannesburg. Private charters can fly to Bethlehem. BY ROAD: From Johannesburg - Take the N3 from Johannesburg to Durban. - Take the R26 Frankfort road off the N3 - Turn off on the Villiers / Frankfort off ramp, just after the Engen One-Stop - Turn right after the off ramp towards Frankfort (R26) - Nearing Frankfort, at T–Junction turn right (R26) - Turn left at Reitz / Bethlehem still on the R26 (after the bridge) - Pass the town Reitz, en-route to Bethlehem - 53 km from Reitz you will reach Bethlehem, continue straight through Bethlehem - After Bethlehem follow signs for the R711/2 to the Golden Gate & Clarens (turn right), follow this road for approximately 30 km. - Nearing the town, you will also see a sign board: “Protea Hotel Clarens” - turn right into the town of Clarens, follow the road - We are situated in the main road.
