  Loved our stay. We live only about 30 mins. north of San Diego and try to stay at the West Gate at least twice a year. It is like being on a vacation even though we are residents.   I loved the room I had. It was the "04" room. It was my second time staying at this hotel. Both times I was lucky enough to be in the same room layout. As I walked down the hall toward my room this time I was trying to not hope that it was the same room so that I wouldn't be disappointed. Wow, was I happy. We upgraded to the "Presidential suite" which was a full view and a step up in luxury.   The hotel, while an older building, had been recently renovated and what a pleasant surprise with all the character & artistic flair in the room (and even the hallway!) The "wow" factor was definitely there when we opened the door to the King suite. The room was a lovely size, the bathroom huge, with great tilework and an awesome shower. The sofa bed actually had 2 separate beds, so we could have had m - I stayed here very recently for six nights while attending a conference downtown. Let me say it was totally worth the extra effort and cost in cabs to get downtown ( half hour by bus, 15 minutes 13 bucks by cab). The staff is friendly, courteous, and professional, from the cleaning staff, valet parking attendants, front desk folks and management. I get the feeling people love their jobs and want to deliver good service to the guests. The bar downstairs is awesome and deserves its own review. On
