Bar Convent is lovely. It's cheap, clean, safe, quiet, comfortable, welcoming and convenient for central York. It isn't luxurious, but you don't choose to stay in a working convent if you want luxury. Everything you need is there and more, including a huge garden which is a big plus in York city centre. It's also wonderful as a solo traveller to stay somewhere that doesn't make you feel like a second-class guest and has thought about the facilities you'll want, like a communal sitting room, dining room and kitchen, because you don't always want to eat alone in restaurants where you're made to feel like a second-class diner. You can be sociable or not as you like. The nuns are lovely but the religious aspect isn't intrusive, so you needn't engage with it if you don't want to.

Although this Hotel won't suite everyone's tastes it has an undeniable old fashioned charm. The staff are friendly, the breakfast good value and you get to sleep in one of the same bedroom's as the sister's in the convent - albeit 20+ years later. No on suite? so what! Excellent shared showers. I will be booking here form now on. By the way, mind your head on the second floor corridors and door frames. They were built with the height of the early nineteenth century females in mind.

Great location, 5 minute ealk into the centre of York. The Staff are lovely and are happy to help. It's not your typical premier or travel lodge but it has character and is well maintained. We stayed in the st Peters suite which was great, large, plenty of space and clean. They're fairly flexible with checking in and out and it's quite cheap to keep the room on till later.
If you don't have a good memory then there is a potential chance you'll forget which corridor you should be going down. There isn't any parking either on site but a carpark very close by. Its £8 for 4 hours, £10 for 5 and £11.50 for a whole day (includes overnight but runs out at 8am) and a bit less for lesser hours. Check out is also at 10am which is quite early if you've had a late night.

no en suite facillities available, parking expensive but to be expected in central location so parked a bit away and walked, bit inconvenient but would not stop us using the accommodation again.

Excellent I have recommend Bar Convent to my other friends if they want somewhere to stay when they visit York and the breakfast is a bonus. I have stayed at the Bar Convent before and that is why I came back.

The Bar Convent is only a few minutes walk from York station with easy access to town. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast next morning was very tasty. All reasonably priced.

the warm welcome from the staff, the quietness of the place, the rooms nicely furnished and equipped with washbasin, the position -though not the best, but good value for money having a look at the prices around. It's a religious place but very open-minded I felt (e.g. there were no crucifixes in the room) so I didn't feel overwhelmed as a non-believer
during the morning, due to thin walls, it's quite noisy and other guests aren't respectful of the fact that people may be sleeping (this was the only real downside)
Location and easy access to the rail station and historic sights. Great value; clean bathroom and big towels, huge kitchen and recreation room available for guest use. Historical significance and architecture (don't miss the hidden chapel). Very friendly and helpful staff. That it serves the community in so many ways - still operates a day school on-site, open for meetings and other community uses, houses an active religious order.
The wireless Internet didn't work in our room or other common guest areas upstairs. It worked fine in the lobby/dining area. Only a minor inconvenience, but would impact business travelers.
Lovely and quiet despite being close to station and centre. Beautiful gardens to rear. Great to have side entrance key to come and go as I liked. Good continental breakfast in café on ground floor which was open all day. Housekeeper takes guests on tour of building and to room on arrival !
Very few en suite rooms but knew this when I booked and didn't really bother me as shower and toilet only a few steps down the corridor - maybe not to everyone's liking.

Large room, museum in the convent, city centre jus 3 - 10 minutes walk, rail station just 4 - 10 mins walk, use of a little kitchen if we wanted to with fridge and microwave, relaxation / reading room, tea and coffee making facilities, light switch bu bed, wonderfully comfortable beds, loads of hot waterm very bright bathroom and big bath, bright and airy cafeteria, not too many rooms / guests, great value for money - less than Travel lodge and Premier inn with many more facilities, when the gift shop was closed the receptionist quickly came over and opened it just for us, the Catholic history and warm welcome, the fact that it is an old building not a modern one more character. Beautiful main interier - stunning roof. Loved how each bedroom was named after a saint! Great towels and provisions in the bathroom and toilet.
Grapefruit was fizzy one morning and had to return it. There was no apology and no one offered to replace it which I thought was rude. The lighting in the bedroom was too dim - the lighting in the bathroom was in conrast wonderfully bright. The knob on the bedroom door was very loose and seemed like it was about to come off which was quite a worry!

Friendly, helpful staff. Meals & snacks reasonably priced, good variety and delicious to eat. A lovely, pleasant, garden available in which to enjoy a snack, read or relax in. Great location and handy nearby car park. Local buses, taxis, plentiful. Convent within easy walking distance to York Minister, City Wall, etc for the able bodied.

The building had lots of character. It was very close to train station and just short walk to the shops and attractions. The staff was super-helpful.

Bathroom manners of other guests - no flushing of toilets and messy toilet in the morning. The low ceilings were a problem for my partner - we were not warned that the headroom would be so low when booking, and he could not stand upright at all on the 3rd floor where our room was The wifi access didn't work on the 3rd floor
