  This is my favorite hotel so far during our trip in Japan. This is a lodge in the mountains, so don't expect luxury (we had shared bathrooms) or a traditional japanese ryokan-like hotel. That said, the lodge was clean and the beds were comfortable. What made this place special was the cozy atmosphere and beautiful location in the mountains.   The family was wonderfully helpful and welcoming. Hot water for tea was in the room upon arrival, as well as a japanese style bathrobe. Everything was clean and beautiful in a traditional Japanese fashion. They let me keep my bag behind the desk for a day after leaving. And a great price! - Matsukaze was a well-staffed, friendly and budget-oriented Ryokan that delivers for the price asked. Though not in the central-area of Matsumoto, it is probably the best-value-for-dollar for people who want traditional Japanese accommodation in this mountainous area. Additionally, the Ryokan is a 15 minute walk from the JR Matsumoto station.
