Stayed in the Deluxe Suite. Very large, comfortable room with an enormous bed and plenty of room to spread out. Included small kitchenette with small fridge, microwave and sink. Lenny is very nice, welcoming and helpful. Extremely quiet and relaxing environment. Lot's of nice touches - binoculars, flashlights to use for viewing the volcano at night, cooler for picnic lunches. Simple breakfast with juice, cereal, fresh fruit and banana bread. It’s located in a beautiful quiet garden and close to the volcano park. We stayed for one night only, but sincerely hope to return for a longer stay. The owner is a very nice person who pays attention to the small details. The room was exceptionally clean. The bed was extremely comfortable. Great water pressure for the shower, which is not always the case on an island. Homemade banana bread and fresh papaya for breakfast with cereal, milk, OJ, coffee and tea available in the kitchen space. Cozy fire place. Lenny was super friendly and made us feel very welcomed. It was the third hotel we had stayed in whilst in Hawaii and this was by far our favourite. It was spotlessly clean, well decorated and so peaceful and quiet. For those people wishing to visit the Volcano National Park, the retreat is about a 5 minute drive. I would highly recommend the Volcano Fern Forest Retreat to anyone. We stayed in the volcano suite and loved it! Lenny was welcoming and helpful. Everything you need he has already thought of from sunscreen to umbrellas. The room was private, clean, spacious and comfortable. It even smelled good! If we come back to the Big Island we will stay here again!. The Fern Deluxe Suite was recently refurbished with an actual king sized bed (not 2 singles pushed together), a gas log fireplace, comfy chairs and a kitchenette with delicious local banana bread and fruit for breakfast. Our host Lenny, was extremely welcoming and friendly!. We totally agree with all the previous positive reviews: the place is a hidden gem. Lenny is a awesome dude who is there to help with your trip and takes amazing care of the cottages, which are more like a slice of a comfortable home. At the end of a quiet mountain road, you will find a lovely studio apartment, nicely furnished, surrounded by lush tropical rain forest. So luxurious:) we were welcomed with a sign from the parkinglot with or name on, made us feel really welcomed. Loved everything about this place!. Nothing. The single lane gravel road to get to the Lodge was filled with potholes. The bathroom would benefit from an exhaust fan to help take out the humidity when trying to put on makeup and fix hair. A make-up light would be a plus too. Nothing. It's a bit tough to find (at the end of a dirt road, but Lenny will email you directions). The walls were a little thin so you could hear people in the next room from the kitchenette, but it didn't impact our sleep!. The weather: unfortunately it rained a lot during our one night stay, but we shouldn't have expected any different - the area is in a rain forest!. having to leave. Not much to say here, except that we were a little sirprised on how far away from everything it was..had problems finding it, and it is in the end of road, far in the forest (u can offcourse drive there). We did not see anyone (not even the owners). But for some this can just be a positive thing. It was extremely nice and quiet:). I was glad we ventured down in the daytime ....it's definitely off the beaten path. nothing. Length of stay....should have stayed longer. rough access road. It was a bit out-of-the-way, but that was also good, because it was very quiet and restful. There needed to be more heat in the room. If you want to add another touch of luxery- add bathrobes!. There is nothing we disliked about this place. It was like a home from home. Awesome :). It felt a bit damp at times but I guess that's part of being in a rainforest. Also the bathroom had a distinct smell, not bad, but almost like the water out of the tap was mineral/volcanic/thermal water. Nothing. The only thing that wasn't fabulous was the lounge - not very comfy. nothing not to like. shower has some sliding panel system rather than a curtain, which is obstructive to taller guests. kind of far from everything that isn't the volcano national park. Can get very wet in that area and we happened to hit a bad time. Could you use a more comfortable sitting area inside. There was a slight mildew/mold smell in the room. The place was not on the navigation, so it was a bit hard to find, need some signs.
