The location. The character of the hotel building and room.

The heating was not on the first night and we were cold in our room, but this was adjusted the next day. Other wise comfortable room

Excellent location. Fascinating building. Very good breakfast and free wifi was easy to use. Luggage storage was brilliant. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Bunk beds were quite old and didn't always feel stable. Didn't realise shutters existed so there were noise and light disturbances during the night.

Despite my late check-in, the staff were generously helpful and friendly. They are very concerned about security and satisfaction of all the guests.

Well located, just 10 minutes walk to the train station/main shopping street. The staff was helpful, the rooms expecially was better than we thought. Seems each room has a story which is quite fun.

There is a courtyard where you can smoke.

The shower both is too small to take a bath comfortably. Wifi is very unstable and if you stay at a basement room, you can't access to 3G data.

This is a great hostel in a building beautifully reenovated. Location is perfect: only a few minutes walk from the railway station and you can easily get to the heart of the city. Also lots of pubs and bars around that are open till late. Rooms are bright and spacious, comfy beds. Perfect for a one night stay.

it's the greatest hostel i have ever been to. it's just like a castle with history. and the reception is really nice. so i decided to spend one more night in York.thank you.

1.The card for door was a bit hit or miss. 2. The latch on my security cage under my bed was broke so I had to use a cage 2 bunks away.

The Hostel was located near Nunnery Lane Car Park which was great because I could leave my car overnight between 6pm to 8am the next morning for just £2.This was important because I was leaving early next am to drive to Castle Howard to work. Located within the City Walls and near to the railway station and within walking distance of sites, pubs and restaurants. Excellent value at £16 per night which included breakfast although I left before 7am so could not partake. I would definitely stay here again. Key card for room and front door - no curfew and 24 hr staff is a big plus. Some Hostels have a curfew. Other guests were fine and there was no problem sleeping in my dorm with lots of others. I liked the ensuite facilities in the room. One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Although I didn't make use of it, the free wi-fi was also another plus.

There was nothing I did not like at £16 it was excellent value.

Central location.....I Would recommend the hostel but mention what I did not like to forwarn them.

Allowing guests to come in at unsociable hours....on my first night two people arrived with their luggage after midnight disturbing everyone and at 4am two guys returned from being out on the town.I Had seen these two earlier the previous evening and overheard them say they intended "hitting the pubs/bars".Coming back at 4am is just so unsociable as its impossible without making a noise and disturbing others.

everything,from the warm welcome,taking care of our bags,being close to town,lovely room,nice and clean, comfy beds,brilliant breakfast,and secure place to keep our luggage so we could squeeze every last minute out of our holiday,and only five minute walk from railway station, and only a few feet away from the entrance to the medieval walls....altogether a brilliant place, a added bonus we loved was all the fun plaques outside each bedroom,it brought history alive.

we booked the large family room which was great,but was on the top of the building,forgot historic buildings dont have stairs ha ha. good excercise

The staff was very nice and friendly. The breakfast included in the price was great. The possibility to leave your luggage even after checking out was excellent.

I found the toilet+shower cabin quite disappointing. When they turn the so-called game room, which seems of very low if any interest at all to tourists, into more showering and toilet facilities it will be excellent.

One of the nicest and friendliest hostels I have stayed in. Clean, good staff, enjoyed the information displays about the various rooms. Also unusual for a hostel to have en-suite bathrooms, and for a change the beds were not squeezed into every available space but there was actual room to move about in the rooms.

Apart from the coffee machine not working at breakfast and the fact that the snack machine doesn't give change, can't think of anything.

Nightclub behind our room vibrating the windows with audible base until 2am, this would possibly only be a problem on a Friday or Saturday night for an older couple.

Excellent location for York City Centre. Beautiful old 18th Century building, and great ambience. Might need to think about exploiting the character of the building a bit better. Great breakfast. Very helpful staff on the front desk who was really brilliant in getting 4 old men sorted out.Most appreciated!

Hauling cycles up and down steps to the basement for storage was awkward. With more and more cycle holidays makers the owner probably needs to address this issue. Our double room with en suite was ok, but there was actually space for two single beds NOT bunks.
