Derwentwater Independent Hostel is set within 17 acres of grounds, this Georgian mansion has a large waterfall and you can spot red squirrels in the grounds. Located in the Lake District National Park,150 metres from the shores of Derwent Water and Keswick’s town centre is 5 minutes’ drive away. Orienteering courses can be arranged and there is a large area for ball games. Canoeing, windsurfing and yachting are all possible on Derwentwater. Borrowdale’s renowned climbing valley is less than 10 minutes’ drive from Derwentwater Independent Hostel. Local bottled ale is served and guests can enjoy homemade food in the dining room . Packed lunches are also available. With a communal lounge area, Derwentwater Independent Hostel also has 2 dining rooms, laundry facilities and a drying room. All rooms have bunk beds with their own light and some have lockable storage. Most bedrooms have a sink and all rooms have access to shared bathrooms.

We stayed for one night with our three children (aged 9, 7 and 5). The location is wonderful with views over Derwent Water. We had not stayed in a Youth Hostel before but it really suited us and we would definately consider going back. The children enjoyed the pool table and table tennis table. The meals were very good and the staff helpful and friendly. We had a family room with two bunks and a single bed.
all reviews » This is a fantastic place to stay in a perfect location. We travelled to Keswick by train and bus then walked to the hostel. Staff were very pleasant and helpful Food was good value, very tasty and plentiful. Liked having a proper sheet, pillow case and clean duvet cover. Self catering provision was excellent. Great facilities for children (table tennis, pool, games). Loved my stay. Amazing location, stunning views, brilliant access for walls. Food was great, staff were lovely. It was our first time in youth hostel. We have a 7, 9 & 12 year old, the family room was spacious, warm and had own toilet and sink, just what we needed. Very peaceful and quiet. Definitely come again!!. Very friendly staff and atmosphere, great facilities, the packed lunches were superb and enough for us, we were cycling the C2C so needed a good lunch! The atmosphere was very nice, there was a secure shed for our bikes, the drying room was great as we had been out cycling in the rain all day. very quiet and beautiful location, facing the lake and backed by deep forest and mountain. need to walk a long way from town centre but a good thing to enjoy the fantastic scenery. Very friendly and efficient staff. Location was ace. getting up in the night to take children to the toilet down the corridor!. Just a little bit chilly in the lounge/ dining room but it was a very cold spell. Lights in lounge needed to be a little brighter for reading (especially for spectacle wearers)....maybe a couple of standard lights with spot lights would be helpful. It would be great if there were some 2- bed rooms. The showers were cold when we had them, which turned out to be right before the dinner rush so everyone else had got there before us and used all the hot water. Toilets and showers need a refurb and as a consequence felt a bit grubby. youth hostels in general seem to have gone up in price. All pillows were hard. Breaskfast was a little cold. Dinner could have been better. No dislikes. Nothing to do with the staff on this comment but some of the people staying are of dubious nature. Ie paper towles from the loos thrown in plant pots outside the loos in the corridors. A spillage in the main entrance was left for someone else to clear up. I don't know what the staff can do about an individuals attitude but it is not fair on hard working people to sort this stuff out.
