This is a very beautiful hotel, set in an idyllic spot with views of Grasmere Lake and the fells. Really one of the loveliest spots in England. The staff were friendly and helpful and the fact that the hotel was completely booked shows how popular it is. One guest told me he'd been coming for 28 years and this is my third time. They serve cocktails and hors d'oeuvres before dinner and the chef is superb-- everything beautifully presented and he/she uses unusual and very pleasing combinations in.
all reviews » We stayed at the Gold Rill for 2 nights in April. We found it to be so lovely, peaceful and relaxing, a proper home from home. It has a beautiful dining room, and with lovely comfy lounges and views. We enjoyed the pitch-and-put no end. The hotel is only a couple of mins walk into the center of Grasmere, just perfect! And with lovely staff, we would definitely go again. Stephen & Jean. We were allocated room 33 a downstairs room in the lodge annex. The room was huge with a superb view through a massive bay window. The leather settee and decent size tv was a bonus. Having to cross the car park to go to the restaurant did not spoil our experience. We had a meal in the restaurant on one evening, it was very good and excellent value for money. the Staff were very good , nothing was too much trouble, they were very friendly and courteous, excellant customer services and attention to detail. The hotel and grounds beautiful. Location for shopping excellant. Hotel beds and rooms very comfortable. Relaxing in the large conservatory, patio and garden. The Gold Rill Hotel is one of the most relaxing hotels I have stayed in. Even though the hotel and dining room were full one night, there still was space and the service remained very good. The venison was lovely. Enjoyable short stay. The room I had did not have a view but was clean and comfortable. All staff were very pleasant and meals very good. The hotel was very relaxing with a comforting atmosphere, perfect location and the rooms were fantastic. Would definitely stay again. There wasn't anything that we didn't like. The bed was like sleeping on a trampoline. On the first morning the cooked breakfast was dried up as it had been kept warm too long. On the other days it was a little better. there was nothing we didnt like. Nothing. It's not that I didn't like it,it's just the staff is so polite and stiff that it takes away a little ambience. I can not fault them for being polite and efficient though. Our bedroom (29) was in the annex and was more of an attic room with only a small window and limited views. The glass dishwasher struggled with lipstick. Any one, staff or customer always looked at the rim before using a glass. Nothing. spent one night in a room at the hotel which was excellent, and the second night in the lodge. The lodge accommodation does not do the hotel any favours. It is dark and very noisy. Staff were very effecient and we felt a bit rushed when eating meals etc. breakfast was too late starting at 8.15. Bedroom (as opposed to the en-suite) in need of serious updating, spring cleaning and decorating. Wife thought very '50s. Nothing. No " bar meals " available even though advertised inside hotel and on hotel sign at approaches to hotel - caused inconvenience on return one evening expecting to eat a " bar meal " Guests should be able to sit where they wish in the restaurant if table not occupied. the fact that the food menu represents the class of the hotel and the fact that if you had teenagers or wanted something simple it was not available(e.g. ham egg and chips or just a salad for lunch. but the steak I had(albeit pricey) was lovely and I could not fault the service. The double room was a bit small but I did book at the last minute. Nothing. Small(ish) room. Pillows could do with replacing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing much. No complaints at all. I booked the last room available. Next time I will book earlier to get a better size room. The hotel attracts an older clientelle- a lot of the guests appeared to be in their 70s. Dinner was nice but very formal I guess due to the age of the patrons. The staff knew nothing about the area, so when I asked for tourist advice about what walks etc to do in Grasmere they said they had no idea!. Very popular with the over 65's hard to spot anyone younger than me and it's not often I can say that these days!. Food - I don't eat meat but do eat fish. None meat options were lacking and poor quality. Shower in the room was rubbish - Lack of water flow. Staff attitude at checkout poor on the issue of bill item for donation. I don't object to paying £1 for local conservation, but I do object to the lack of description on the bill and the poor response from the desk attendant when I asked what it was for. It could have been a donation for the managers retirement fund for all I knew. No complaints at all. The staff were so attentive that meals felt rushed. We'd barely sat down to enjoy the stunning views and look at the menu before being asked for our orders, when we asked for a little longer, a minute later we were asked again and made to feel somewhat uncomfortable that we weren't ready! It felt like we were against the clock to finish our meals, even though I'm sure that wasn't the case. Sometimes, less is more!. Wi fi could be improved upstairs. dinner was a bit to hurried but food was excellent. bins were not emptied daily. nothing bad. Shower wasn't working properly so I mentioned it - they apologised and thanked me for telling them, then gave me a reduction, not that it was required. low beams in room, cracked head once. No flexibility for time of evening meal -- 7.30 too late for us in winter. We ate in village after 1st night. Mattress very soft. No light/lamp near tea-making tray.

Please be aware that if the main hotel is fully booked, a room will be reserved for you in Rillside Lodge which is located in the same grounds. The Lodge is situated just 50 yards from the main hotel reception with its own private parking and can be accessed via the hotel gardens on foot or via the road running alongside the hotel by car. The only difference between the lodge and the hotel is that guests come across to the hotel for meals. Only 2 rooms are suitable for wheelchair access or for those with mobility issues.
