It was clean even though it was old. The pool was clean and the rooms were clean. The employees were nice and accommodating. There is a great Italian restaurant nearby (as well as a restaurant inside the hotel but we didn't eat at it). There is only one street separating the harbor from the hotel so it is in a good location. There is a money exchange place next door which was helpful and the parking was free. The Dover Castle and White Cliffs were close by as well. Would stay again. It was a go.
all reviews » After reading many negative comments we were apprehensive about what we would find. Initial reaction on entering reception was that it looked warm and friendly. We did not consider the place run down. decoration was not modern but very pleasing to the eye. Staff very friendly, good size restaurant and excellent bar. Room large and comfortable and we enjoyed the facility of the swimming pool. For a one night stay before embarking for France we found it excellent value for money. The staff were friendly, very helpful and someone was available 24 hours a day, The room was comfortable, smart and welcoming. The hotel was near the centre of the town and all amenities, also close to the beach, all within walking distant, fantastic view of the castle from our window. The amenties in the hotel were great for the low cost of the hotel, and included a heated swimming pool and a bar and restuarant and free wifi in public areas. I loved the location to the Dover port, perfect! I loved the fact it has a gym, swimming pool at great value and that they are open till late! I loved the bar being open till late. I loved the bed comfort, 1st hotel I've slept properly in! I loved the casualness without it being under- formal (relaxing). I loved the timings for food and service was good. I liked the room and its amenities. I would recommend the hotel. Location was good for the port, a walk on the cliffs was nice. Meal in hotel was adequate, me "can I see a wine list?" waitress "yes we have red and white" bless her she tried hard to please, but all good value, room clean and comfortable. You get what you pay for, no complaints at this price. A nice touch would to have had our plates taken away after we paid the bill at the table! But a good laugh. Prior to our stay I read very negative feedback about this Hotel. I think this may be due to commercial sabbotage as the Hotel and its staff are fine. Our standards are high and we found that cleanliness, everywhere, was of the highest standard. We would recommend the County Hotel to anyone who asked. We would definitely stay at the Hotel again as a stopover for getting an early morning ferry. it had that wow factor when I first arrived I wasnt expecting anything like this one. exceeded expectation. excellent for fitness/swimming. excellent value for money well recommended for fitness/swimmers free facilities which I wasnt expecting! well done A first class pass here! lounge in rooms I certainly wasnt expecting.late check in is excellent. Staff were brilliantly straight-friendly as well as gay -friendly. Very helpful if I could have clicked two boxes I would have hit the golf sports box. As cyclists they couldn't have tried harder to look after us. Loved the fact that they offered to turn on the heating if we were cold. Don't know if these are new staff but they are customer mega. The night watchman was very nice, effective and helpfull in the night of hurricane, with kindness responding to all of us who were lost in the night and strong wind. General atmosphere of wellness, with large hall, pub and dining room.From the entry one feels at home, and large, clean rooms with marble sinks, reflect an old luxourouse hotel. TV in our room not working which staff unable to fix so given another room opposite which was much better, so thankyou. This hotel is maybe a bit dated but that is what gives it a certain appeal, it's comfortable and has a welcoming atmosphere that you don't always get at modern hotels. This was our third visit and won't be our last. The location couldn't be better for the town centre and the docks. We actually like the fact that the hotel is rather old-fashioned.The bedrooms are spacious and although the furnishings are dated, it is comfortable. We arrived one day earlier by mistake but they were very helpful in allocating us another room. Hotel is alongside main road to, and very convenient for, the Port of Dover which is very busy but the double+ glazing is very good. Conveniet location for the ferry terminal and searont. Comfortable rooms although the first one we were offered had the heating permanently on as it could not be adjusted. We were given another room without any fuss. The reception is covered 24/7 (at night by the porter, who could even be the duty manager) The rooms are spacious, cleaned daily with fresh towels and anything else you required t enjoy your stay. Despite the very cold weather, the welcome we received on arrival made us feel welcome. Also, upon departing the following day, the staff in reception were very helpful with their advice. The morning waiter was A+++. cheap and got a room in need, when stranded in Dover after a snowfall all roads were blocked. The exterior of the building looks like it might not be a very nice place and there is a run down building next door but really the hotel is clean and the facilities are nice even though they are old. Being pernickety, water in the swimming pool was cold!!!. No wifi in the room, and the tv sometimes had trouble getting a signal. I did not like the decor, it was run down and almost tatty looking. But this is a minor point in my opinion as you have great value and thats more important. I did not like the fact the receptionist allowing a group of non-residents in who wanted to use the wifi, bought drinks and proceeded to lare at my wife and make suggestive comments. It placed me into a situation of unrest and anger. I would not recommend Dover Town despite recommending your hotel. Dover town, main area full of slot machines betting shops and pawn brokers... Might suit some. Some attention required to spruce up the Hotel and repair broken furnishings, sinks etc but, overall, everything useable. freeview television the green print across the screen was annoying and so is the pictures keep breking up.sky or virgin media would have been better.otherwise nothing to default. it is on the road. Hotel corridors looking very tired, and depressing - decor very dated. Carpets needed replacing, very stained. If I had to make a point it would be the dust and mildew in the bathroom but certainly nothing serious. No availability of any 'smoking' rooms as are possible in many hotels and chains on the continent. No air con, dated fittings (tho all worked OK) some might not like fact it's beside busy road to docks. Couldn't leave windows open because of noise from adjacent road. The hotel was bit jaded and it is surrounded by derelict sites. No secure parking. We felt the interior rooms deserved `a bit of a face lift`. Receptionist on arrival could have made a bit more effort, but once we had checked in seemed to be a bit better. A little tired but clean. I found the cleanliness of the Hotel very good but let down by dirty glass panes and mirrors in the reception area and the electric points in the room were badly placed for using hair tongs etc ( too far away from mirrors ). Perhaps the fittings were a bit jaded, but could not find anything that did not work. The rooms seemed a bit tired, but it was cheap so I do understand. All good. Mould on shower curtain. Soft/lumpy mattress. The Bar should of been maned better but no real negatives to report . Only had full fat milk with the tea facilities, would have preferred semi skimmed, so ended up with black coffee. Nothing. not a very attractive exterior. there was nothing I did not like. The decor was a little dated. Heater in the room did not work. Was offered another room, otherwise all good. We booked for two days, but on arriving back after a day trip to France, found that our room had not been serviced. We had to change rooms as there was no maid service in the afternoons. Shower fixed in the wall, not convenient to have a proper shower for the babies. The whole hotel needs re-furbishing. First impression and room on front but as good as any budget hotel we have stayed in. Nothing all o.k. Hotel has tired elegance-needs a bit of t.l.c.- but is comfortable-like an old pair of shoes- very relaxing and easy to wear. It is not a modern hotel with modern facilities. Lacking investment in upkeep. The hotel is very dated. The traffic noise , but I suppose you have to pt up with it if you are right on the main road. There was no heating in the room. We turned on the old heater in the room, it started working, very weakly and loudly but because we were tired we fall asleep. After an hour the heater noise stopped so as the warm air coming out of it and temperatures -2 outside the room was very cold by the morning.
