Opposite Bath Spa Station, this Georgian-style hotel offers fine cuisine and free Wi-Fi. It has an excellent location close to shops and about 650 metres from the Roman Baths. The famous architect, Brunel, designed The Royal in the 19th century. Its rooms decorated in a traditional style with soft duvets and goose and down pillows. They also have a flat-screen TV with DVD player, complimentary cotton slippers, hairdryer, trouser press, tea and freshly ground coffee making facilities, biscuits and mineral water. The restaurant Brasserie Brunel restaurant has been designed in the style of a Parisian brasserie. There is also a bar, plus the recently created residents lounge. The restaurant is well known for excellent food and specialises in great steaks. Fixed-price and à la carte menus are served at lunch and dinner in addition to home-made bar food. There are a number of car parks within about 50 metres of The Royal and limited parking on site.

I loved the room which was well equipped, and beautifully furnished, with a large shower room.I'm a vegetarian, and although I didn't have dinner at the hotel because I met with friends, I did have an excellent breakfast.The staff that I had any contact with, were lovely.I wasn't affected by any noise from railway station or road, as other guests have stated, and my room was opposite the station.

The only problem was with the location and night time. It was very loud as we were on the front of the hotel, but other than that, the hotel was fantastic. The very noisy floor and the location was on a main road with a lot of traffic and was very noisy. The only window in the room was too high to even see out of. The elevator was only big enough for one person to take luggage up and down to our room. The room was too small, we had to squeeze through to go to bed. There was only one window which we could not leave open (and we wanted to as it was quite hot) because of the noise from machinery. The view was pretty bad as well.Too hot, not the best room in the world. the area was grubby looking + no parking. Breakfast tables never complete - each had something missing so people had to keep swapping but not really a problem. Decor in rooms and toilets very very dated but bar and lounge etc modern and nice. Dirty quilt cover on the bed, tired furnishings in bedroom,paper-thinpartition walls,dull breakfast menu. room very small, poorly decorated and extremely hot, uncomfortable and claustraphobic. Homeless shelter 100yds outside very disconcerting especially walking past large groups of homeless people at night. Breakfast poor, and developed a stomach upset after evening meal and left in early hours of morning. The fact that my conformed booking was not guaranteed.

Our resident General Manager, Sara Todd, is fully involved in the day-to-day running of the hotel and this personal attention extends to the restaurant. It has an enviable reputation for excellent food, specialising in great steaks using only mature British beef, and including grilled chicken, fish, vegetarian dishes and spicy Mexican fajitas plus a daily choice of chef’s specials.

For guests who wish a little more to eat, at lunch and dinner there is an excellent value 3-course fixed price menu with a wide choice of dishes, selected from the à la carte menu for only GBP 17.50. Alternatively, you can choose individually priced dishes from the à la carte menu. Whether you select a fixed meal or eat à la carte, you will enjoy the same high quality in food and service in a friendly and very attractive restaurant, which is fully air conditioned and non-smoking.

Most dishes are freshly cooked to order to ensure that we maintain maximum quality.

Hotel information details

Brunel, the famous English architect of the time, designed the hotel for the arrival of the railway in Victorian times. The Royal prefix was bestowed upon the hotel as a reminder of Queen Victoria's visit to the city of Bath. The hotel was originally named the Royal Station Hotel and commenced trading in 1846. In 1852, because of the growing influence of rail travel and the hotel’s close proximity to the station, an upper-level footbridge was built, directly linking the first floor of the hotel with the station platforms for the convenience of hotel guests. This footbridge remained until 1936.

The Royal has changed ownership a number of times during its 150-year history and in March 1995, The PR Inns partnership acquired the business. PR is a small private company, wholly owned by its two partners who are highly experienced hoteliers and restaurateurs.

Travelling information

15 miles from Bristol Airport and 10 miles from the m4 (Junction 18) motorway. Bath is only 1 hours by rail from both London and Birmingham, and we are located close by the railway and bus stations, making 'getting to us' very easy. There are a number of large, relatively inexpensive car parks within 50 yards of the Royal.
