We just returned home from a trip to Poland. While in Katowice we stayed at the Hotel Monopol for 4 nights. What a fantastic experience! From the moment we stepped thru the front doors and onto the floating glass floors of the lobby, we knew we were in for a treat. The entire hotel has been redone to reflect the industrial surroundings of the area with 5 star flair. the dining room is superbly done with sloping ceilings made entirely of solid glass and steel beams. very modern and minimalist. I have stayed here a number of times on business as well as in most of the other 4 star hotels in the area. The Monopol is in a class of its own. The style is a 1930's industrial art deco with wood and granite mixed with modern glass, chrome and steel. The rooms are spacious and clean with high ceilings and the occasional dead zebra skin on the parquet. The bathrooms have heated floors and a spacious shower that in one of them leaked quite badly. A delayed review, sorry but I had to! It’s a hotel we MUST visit again, just loved it. This hotel has 100 years history, but inside it’s glass, metal, chrome, art deco, b&w XIX and early XX mining industry photos. We had room on 5th floor. Spacious, huge sliding window, big terrace with glass floor overlooking roofs. My first thought was to sit there with glass of wine and just watch the city, that loft industrial feeling. Bathroom v. modern and well equipped. Little window in ceiling above - John
