  We liked the friendly welcome and assistance with our luggage. The room was spotless, the bed comfortable, and the front deck was great for an afternoon aperitif!   We stayed four nights in March 2013 and needed the break after being robbed in Auckland. Jan and Kevin were unobtrusive but always there with help or information when we needed it. The location is a few kilometres "out of town" and we loved this. The town was too busy for us with constant traffic and people coming and going on the ferries. The view across the bay is superb and we never tir - I found The Retreat while googling accommodation in Paihia. After a long drive from South Auckland I was welcomed with a big genuine smile from Jan, who showed me my room with the spectacular view from the deck. The furniture is a dated and old but clean and the bed was really comfortable. The view from the deck is spectacular and I managed to get some wonderful sunset photos. The peace and tranquility ideal for the relaxing get-away I was looking to have. I would recommend this to anyone w
