We stayed two nights at the Uotoshi Ryoken. Fantastic service. The owner and his sister were warm, welcoming and friendly. The owner spoke great English which made things a lot easier given we had very little Japanese at our disposal. The archery demonstration was suberb - the owner spent over two hours with me, both instructing me on the art and the history behind it. The Ryoken is an easy five minute walk from the Yudanaka Rail Station and is easy to find. I'd thoroughly recommend staying at .
all reviews » The friendliness of the owner and his sister put us at ease after a long flight and train ride. The archery demonstration was very interesting, and the recommendation for the sumo wrestler restaurant was great. Plus, it was really nice to get a ride of the base of the mountain where the monkey park is located. Host helpful; lift to Jigokudani monkey park; demonstrated noble art of the longbow. Onsen hot and clean, maybe renovated recently. I didn't do any meals there so I can't comment. This place is fantastic!!!! The owner and his family were so helpful. The drove us to the Snow Monkey Park and helped us figure out how to go skiing. They were great!. Owners of this hotel are the nicest people I have met. Friendly, welcoming, caring and doing everything to make happy their guests. The room is comfortable and warm. Amazing staff who provided free japanese archery lessons/demonstration, tea in our room, lift to the monkey park and useful information with good English. Staff was extremely polite and helpful. He gave us a drive to the Snow Monkey Park for free. Close to the railway station, easy access. Comfortable and very lovely ryokan with a very friendly owner. Everything else was great!. Elderly, ailing dog makes the front foyer smell strongly. Nothing. The hotel is old and needs some fixture to look more aesthetic. And its cold to use a bathroom, which is located outside of the room. /. I could not understand instructions from the station, but perhaps its my personal problem. Urine-stained mat for the dog in the entrance. Was absolutely shocked at the smell. Left an extremely poor first impression, especially for my guest (their 2nd time at a Japanese inn). Worn-out carpet with holes on the 2nd floor. Cockroach sitting on my clothes in the morning (in winter). Very small room (just barely big enough for 2 futon and a kotatsu). Acceptable, but unmemorable food for an inn of this type.
