We were a family group: Grandpa, Grandma, Daughter, grandsons ages 11, 12. We needed affordable lodging near shopping and public transportation. Downtown Reykjavik Apartments (dra) met and exceeded our requirements. The dra is just 2 blocks from one of the main bus stations in Reykjavik. From that point, one can travel anywhere in the City. About 3 blocks from dra is a 24 hr. Small grocery shop with food essentials. The main shopping/walking street begins at the bus station and extends a number.
all reviews » We booked the smallest and cheapest available room (the double studio). When we arrived, finding our keys and room was very easy. The room was small but very clean - the bedding smelt very fresh. We also saw a family studio which was bigger and again very clean and pleasant. I asked to upgrade our room as I wanted a bit more space (the prices are very reasonable and I was happy to pay more). However when the owner and Thora heard it was the last leg of our honeymoon, they upgraded us to a 3 bed. First of all, the lady at the front desk was superb - amazingly friendly and helpful all around; she was able to call and coordinate our pick-up from the apartments to the airport on our departure date. Secondly, the location of the building could not be better; you are only a 5 minute walk to the main street with lots of shopping and places to eat and the waterfront is only about 10 min away total as well. There are nearby food markets, many of which are either open till midnight or even 24 . Everything! When we arrived late in the evening we realized that we had booked the wrong type of room. We called the owner who answered immediately and solved the problem in a second. He gave us the code to the keybox where we could pick up the key to another room that he had available. It was perfect - two rooms with a door inbetween, a queen bed and a single bed, plus a sofabed in the first room/kitchen. As we have different sleeping habits we didn't have to bother eachother, it was absolutel. Gudjon was very helpful and welcoming. We had a problem with our car rental, which he helped us sort out. He was willing to call on our behalf to help translate. We had not arranged for early check-in, but were able to store our luggage until our room was ready. Parking is available right at the front door. The space was very clean and the bed was quite comfortable. The shower was nice and hot, with good water pressure. There were large windows in our room that let in nice light and fresh . We enjoyed our stay at Downtown Reykjavik Apartments, and were delighted to find a spacious apartment that was clean and well equipped. The staff (particularly Thora), was helpful and friendly; accommodating our requests and questions. The price was quite reasonable for the Reyjkavik market, and the building is well situated for access to the central city; with the bus station several minutes away and a market 'round the corner. FlyBus delivers directly to the door, so trips to and from the air. We had enjoyable & relaxing stay at Downtown Reykjavik Apartments. Very friendly staff & owner Mr Árnason. Great value for money. As for the ratio of price and quality accommodation I think there is no better in Reykjavik. Very clean and comfortable, although we had small Economy Family Studio apartment on the lower floor (4 persons). They have free WiFi and secure parking behind the building which is very important if you take a car rental. 10 minutes walk from the main street in Reyk. The apartments were clean, spacious, comfortable and very close to downtown! There is plenty of utensils and equipment to cook in, along with a microwave if need be! Parking is convenient around the corner of the apartments! The staff were really friendly on checking in an even offered to drive us to the supermarket when we asked where it was! The room has a separate shower to bathroom which is useful when you have 4 people getting ready in the morning! The price was excellent for the time we s. Great value for the money, wonderful location just off one end of Reykjavik's main shopping street. Very well maintained two, three and four bedroom apartments are perfect for families with older children or small groups of adult travelers. Free wifi and washer-dryer included. Also, the kitchen facilities can save a lot of money on food in Reykjavik. Owner-manager is gracious and responsive. Tour busses will pick up there, just like at a hotel. The staff, specifically Thora, was kind, helpful, and friendly. The apartments (we stayed in 200 and 330) were spacious, clean, and comfortable; and for Reykjavik, very reasonably priced. The apartment complex is conveniently located for access to the central city, and the FlyBus delivered us and retrieved us from the front door. I highly recommend Downtown Reyjkavik Apartments as your base of operations for a journey to Iceland. The hostel is well renovated and has a kitchen with everything. The room is clean. Although it is not near to the city center, there is a supermarket openning until 12 pm. nearly. And almost all day tours can pick you up in front of the hostal, so don´t worry.The owners are very very friendly, and thank you very much for the white wine on Black Friday. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The small kitchenette was useful for making breakfast, and best of all it had a coffee maker! It was advertised as having two single beds, but I found out (luckily before we arrived) that this wasn't the case, but the Manager sorted this out before we arrived. All in all very comfortable and I would stay again. The apartment was in a very convenient location only a 5 minute walk from the main street and the cathedral. When we reached we found it in a spotless condition and the apartment was in general very airy and had good aesthetics. Realising the money that we were paying per person for the apartment we couldnt have gotten a better bang for our buck. I fully recommend dra it is clean has lots of space and the beds were very comfy. It is very central to the main shopping street in Reykjavik, however very quiet too so easy to sleep. The kitchen makes for a much more affordable stay in Iceland. I would definitely stay in these apartments again, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Staff and manager were friendly and very focused on your well-being, and so they gave service beyond my expectations. It was a 4 girl girls trip. We loved the owner! The room was big and clean. The location was walking distance from the city centre. No telephone access because the telephone in the lobby was not working. We didn't have mobile phones that worked in Iceland so we had to ask the receptionist to put in calls for us. We would like to have had access to phone service. There was just a soap in the bathroom. We thought there would be maybe shower-gel or something at least, but that's just a little detail. :). The only complaint would be that there should be two double beds in the two bedroom apartment rather than a double and a twin!. A few minor annoyances like water seeping out of one of the showers in an apartment that we rented (we rented two), and once in a while some noise from the street coming up into the bedrooms that face it. Neither thing was a big deal. (Get a room on a higher floor if you're worried about it.) We all had cell phones, so it made no difference to us that the rooms had no land-line phones, but it might bother somebody without access to a cell. There was nowhere to put clothes so had to live out of suitcase. Also, just one hook in the bathroom which was not ideal, as only had one towel each for the whole time we were there. Minor things, but easily solved by putting up a shelf or two, and some hooks. Nothing. Loved the apartment. That I had to go home! ;). In the Second bathroom is only a toilet for men. Our room was advertised as accommodations for 2 to 4 adult persons. It really was too small for more than 2 adults. If I was bieng very fussy, it would be nice to have a hairdryer. Only gripe was that although self catered everything did have to be hob or microwave cooked as there was no oven in the room and as it is self-catering we were expecting one. Our room was We were streetside and on groundlevel. Streetnoise and smoking guests outside caused second hand smoke in our apartment. Limited TV stations.. I find nothing, actually to complain about... I'm too lazy to carry luggages down the staircases as our room is located on basement floor and no elevator in the apartment. Rough toilet paper and no facial tissues in the room. We had an apartment at the ground floor with large windows in front of a parking place. Quite a lot of people went around during the day. It was far better to choose an apartments at first or second floor. The key left for us did not work but fortunately there was someone there to help - might have been a problem if we had arrived very late. Shower area is open plan with rest of bathroom so bathroom very wet after numerous showers. The wifi never worked in our apartment during a 10 night stay. We had to access it in the corridor which was inconvenient. The owner acknowledged the problem and said it needed an engineer visit which should've happened during the 10 days but the problem was never resolved. Free access to wifi is one of my factors for chosing a place so it was the main problem we had during an otherwise great stay. not applicable. Maid service should be included every 2 to 3 days. Should have bigger laundry facilities since the apartment is do big. two rooms but only one sitting toilet, better if shelves are provided in the smaller bathroom. Staff is not at the desk at all time makes it difficult if we need to ask for travel info or pay in cash. Email is the most convenient way to contact them and inform them if we want to see them. It's advertised as a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment but there's no toilet in the second, much smaller 2nd bathroom & no where to hang towels. Free wifi unstable, we cannot use wifi for whole night due to system issue. We stay for 4 nights but no one clean-up the rubbish bin. No telephone use for contact the services manager/local contact as not all travaller suppose to have roaming services. We didn't know the 2nd bathroom, only had a urinal and not a traditional toilet. And the shower sprayed water everywhere in the 2nd bthroom. And lastly if you showered in that bthroom, there was no place to put your things (toiletry bag, change of clothes etc). The apartment was a bit dusty and the windows were dirty. There is only one proper bathroom in the room and 2 showers for up to 8 people. Since one shower and the toilet are in the same room in the morning you need to plan a lot of time for 8 people to get ready. There is some weird internet limitation that makes internet unusable if you're a heavy user and rely on internet throughout your stay. Very annoying.
