Hamburg 5* star luxury Hotels

I spent 24 hours at this Sofitel property in April 2009 as I waited for a cruise ship departure from the nearby Hamburg Cruise Center. It compares very well to any large hotel chain both in appointments of the rooms and first rate service by its English speaking staff. The large bed, actually two twins blended together, with separate duvets was very comfortable. The bathroom was very large for the price of the room (US$225) with both a large shower and a bathtub. I stayed at the Grand Elysee because of its proximity to the Hamburg congress centre and I was impressed in every way. The room was very spacious, bright and elegant. The beds must have been new and very very comfortable. There is free cable internet and a nice size desk, which is very convenient if you're there on a work trip. It's been quite a while since the last time I've stayed here, however I wanted to praise this hotel, as it has been a really pleasurable experience back in August 2008. The hotel is just a short taxi ride from the "Hauptbahnhof" and only a short walk from the city center. It's situated along a busy street, but even when you have a room facing the lake (which I did) you're not at all disturbed. It was my first stay at this hotel that was just perfect that we have never stayed anywhere else whenever our travels take us Hamburg (which is every two years.) The beautifully decorated rooms have stunning views of the lake. It's just a quick walk into town and all Hamburg has on offer including those infamous Currywursts! Drinks in the salon late in the afternoon is relaxing as well as romantic. Doc Cheng's is a MUST restaurant located in the hotel. It's fusion food at its absolute best. - David

It is no secret that the Atlantic needs refurbishing - and it is being announced in their Atlantic magazine to start soon. What some of the public areas, the pool and the bathrooms lack in style is definitely made up for by the fantastic service attitude and friendliness of the staff (we are in otherwise stiff Hamburg after all!). no surprises here - 5 star service, excellent room, spacious and quiet. made use of spa and had good experience there too. the location is very convenient. the only thing it lacked was a pool. if you want that, the marriot might be a better choice, all other things being equal. - Bernadette

Just stayed at the Park Hyatt on a trip that also included the Regent in Berlin and the Kempinski Taschenbergpalais in Dresden, so this comparison is in heady company. The rooms certainly represent a modern take on luxury, so if you like Baroque, this might not be your spot. Personally, I like any style as long as it is well-executed in details, and the Park Hyatt is for sure. We stayed at the Renaissance for two nights, mainly because we got a great deal for a five-star. My wife is from Hamburg, and we actually met other natives who have chosen the Renaissance as their port of call whenever they visit their home city. The hotel is very centrally located, and the rooms and facilities are modern and sleek. Our room was smallish, but quiet and pleasant. We have stayed in W hotels, several Design Hotels (this is one of them) and many boutique hotels. Side is the coolest hotel we have ever stayed in. I wish there was a reason to go back to Hamburg. We stayed one night as a stopover on a drive from London to Norway. It was just supposed to be a way station but it will turn out to be the best hotel on our trip. It is definitely more for business travelers as Hamburg does not seem to be a tourist kind of town. I won't bore you with the details - Edward

We booked this hotel for the day we arrived in Europe, so we got to the InterContinental in the late morning, jet-lagged and no doubt disheveled. Service from arrival through checkout was impeccable; staff were friendly and helpful. We appreciated the lack of fuss about our early check-in. Our room was clean and well appointed. I was having hard time finding hotel in city center, I found this place for two nights and never left the premises. It is fanstastic, a special experience (I would not stay here if you are looking to hang out in jeans and everyday shirts)... the staff does EVERYTHING possible to make you stay the best you have ever experienced. We were traveling with our married children, and occupied 2 rooms. Both were glorious. The review here says it has 266 rooms! Please correct that, as I believe there are only 8. This is, afterall, a lovely converted townhouse. Breakfast was a feast of homemade pastries, fresh fruits that looked like Martha Stewart arranged them, and eggs. All set in a lovely room off the garden. We are anxious to return. We've never been disappointed in a Relais and Chateau property. - Kamel
