The property is very interesting. Traditional, very well maintained and decorated with great taste. Our superior room was very spacious, overlooking the garden, and the bathroom was modern. Breakfast is very complete. We really enjoyed the heated outdoor pool, excellent for spending the afternoon. Overall a great base for visiting the Loire Valley.

Chateau de Portail was a wonderful experience and Claude Herbert was an amazing host. It was nice to be welcomed so warmly into his home with nowhere out of bounds. The house is charming, warm, comfortable and elegant with a relaxed feel to it thanks to Claude Herbert's hospitality. As a family with two young girls (aged 3 and 5) this can sometimes be an annoyance to other guests and the host but we never felt like this. A the end of a long journey being met by Christophe and ushered to the lovely swimming pool to cool off was wonderful. The chateau was beautiful in large gardens which were child friendly and boisterous boys were not curtailed in noisy and extensive games of hide and seek. We were only booked in overnight on our way to Calais from Carcassonne. We arrived after a 7 hour drive so a dip in the outdoor heated pool was a welcome and rejuvenating experience. They sorted out our need for private parking, while the trees outside the hotel were being felled, and normal parking arrangements were disrupted. The. We liked the very warm welcome. Emily went over and above to make us feel welcome. My kids had a special request: to borrow some crayons, and yes Emily found some for them to use.
