Although this hotel was a bit pricey, it was definitely worth being right in the center of the action. The location was excellent. We had a room facing the back--no view, but it was so nice, quiet, and romantic. My parents had a room on the street and said it was a bit noisy at night and early morning, but enjoyed people watching. The staff was excellent. Very friendly and helpful. We stayed at the Hotel Weisses Kreuz from the 3rd to 7th December and had everything we were looking for. The room was large and the bathroom very modern and spotless. The room was also warm and quiet and the buffet breakfast was adequate. The location was ideal for visiting the Christmas Markets which were all within walking distance of the hotel as were the main shopping areas. My husband and I are well travelled, having been from Hong Kong to New York to Sydney....and this was the best hotel experience we had! I would recommend this hotel to anyone and look forward to visiting again. When my 3 children recall our stay in Salzburg, they only talk about our 'friends' at the hotel. My husband and I both studied abroad for a semester in Salzburg years ago and wanted to relive the experience. Staying at the Hotel Elefant helped to make our trip! It's right off the main shopping street - the Getreidegasse - and in the heart of downtown. You can walk to ANY of the main destinations. The service was great including a continental breakfast one wants to wake up for. The rooms are a bit tiny, but have Austrian charm and most importantly, their own bathroom. Upon arrival we were assigned a room in the annex across the street from the main hotel. We complained and were told we could have a room in the main building if we wished. Upon checking out the room in the annex we decided to stay there. The room there was larger with a spacious sitting area and a large modern bathroom None of the rooms were luxurious but were certainly clean and comfortable. My husband and I stayed here for a couple of nights and were very pleased overall with the hotel. The location was fantastic - walking distance to everything with restaurants and bars and shopping in the same block. The view from our room was also wonderful - we overlooked the river. The room itself was VERY large, the bathroom was HUGE! Not your typical European accommodations from a size perspective. The only complaint we had was that we were located next to a bar and the noise was pretty bad - Julie

This is a really good little hotel. The location couldn't be better, but so was everything else. The rooms were nice - not too overdone. Slightly smallish but smart. The restaurant is absolutely excellent. The art theme works well and the place presents a very different image to the norm. Very impressed! - Alan

This hotel was came off much better than I anticipated. Although simple and straightforward, the room was spotlessly clean and modern. It is located only a short stroll from the old town and for a great price! There was free internet available as well. The only complaint we had about our stay was the VERY firm bed, but an extra comforter was provided upon request. - Derek

Having visited Salzburg before staying in the Sheraton Hotel (which has a reputation as being the best hotel in the city) I was initially nervous about the Hotel Stein however, such nerves were unnecessary. The Hotel was great and I would not stay anywhere else now in Salzburg. The roof top terrace overlooking the City was stunning, the breakfasts lovely, rooms minimal but stylish and the location was perfect. Would definitely recommend this hotel. - Andrew

Gastehaus Eva-Maria is a great place to stay in Salzburg. There are only 7 rooms so it really feels like a bed & breakfast. The rooms are good size and the bathrooms are terrific. The hostess (Elfie, I think) is great -- very, very friendly! She gave us good directions for walking into the heart of Salzburg (which took less than 10 minutes and was a very scenic walk!). You may want to take a taxi to the Gastehaus the first time (unless you have a car of course) as it is a little hard to find - Doreen
