Guy Fawkes
High Petergate (York ) YO1 7HP
Standing in the shadow of York Minster, this ancient inn was the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 05 November 1605.
Today the inn is the finest in York and one of the best-preserved in the country. With gas lighting, timber floors, log fires, huge settles, ales served from barrels behind the bar and a grandfather clock ticking in the corner, this dark and mysterious inn is a treasure. It is also home to the world-famous Guy Fawkes Ghost Walk.
There are beautiful hotel bedrooms and the stunning Belfry Suite.

We liked everything - cleanliness, well appointed rooms, daily clean and beautiful quality of the towels, superb toiletries in bathroom. Delightful staff in dining room and reception. Excellent breakfasts, and in particular the smoked haddock with lemon and herb butter - yummy! short and easy access to all that the city has to offer. The food is great. with friendly staff. They are busy but if you grab their attention they will be happy to help. The beer . They have ale of the week at a really good price. The warmth and atmosphere of this very old Inn which still uses gas light. Food great. Good central location.όλα τα σχόλια »
The immediate sense of history. It was like stepping back in time and so very close to the Minster. The full Yorkshire breakfast was probably the best breakfast I have ever tasted, all locally produced ingredients and cooked to perfection. Well done. The hotel has a friendly and authentic feel to it. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff very helpful. The location was excellent for visiting the historic venues in york. An excellent weekend will definately go again.Excellent central location, fantastic building and lovely decor, good beer and food (breakfast bacon sandwich really hit the spot !), staff were great, really friendly. Location. Friendly and excellent staff throughout the entire hotel.the closeness to everything and the ambience of the hotel. The staff made you feel like you were family.Friendly staff, great atmosphere. A quirky, interesting hotel, where friendly staff gave excellent service (and very good breakfasts). The hotel, staff and location. Location perfect, our room looked straight out at the Minster, handy for all shops, bars, restaurants etc. Loved the ambience, had a great feeling of history. Bed was fantastic, very comfortable. Lovely breakfast.Right next to the minster. Central for all amenities. Warm friendly atmostphere excellent food. The hotel is lit by gas lamps which adds to the atmosphere and ambiance. The hotel has lots of history around it and the rooms are beautiful and the bed was very comfy and clean, the view of York Minister is brilliant and the staff were friendly and helpful, i would recommend and i would stay again.Pretty little place with friendly and helpful staff and very well furnished room - if a bit small. So central one can walk everywhere. Friendliness and informality of the staff. Willingness to do that little bit extra. Convenience for shopping and sights.Great location in the heart of York! Very nice, large, clean room. Nice Pub that wasn't loud and closed fairly early. Great ales on tap. The location was central and well placed for shops, restaurants. The hotel itself was very atmospheric. The oldy world type of place that it is even the inn had a loveleyatmosphere. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were all very friendly. the location was perfect, and the rooms were a good size. We loved the olde worlde theme. Great position. Lovely open fires. Good atmosphere. Very good breakfasts!. quaint room and 4 poster bed plus location right next to york minister is ideal.was nice to be woken by the sound of church bells. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a choice of menu. Fantastic location in centre of York. Gorgeous old building in excelent location with wonderful views of the minster. Great local amenities.hotel is in excellent position and only 10 mins walk from station. Very convenient for york minster. One tiny comment. I had to go down on my hands and knees to change the plugs from kettle to hair dryer as the socket was under the dressing table. this hotel does not accept any form of credit/debit card. CASH ONLY.We had enough cash on us but some people may not. Some noise outside at night. Road sweeper at 5am ! Not the hotel's fault !. Hotel was great, just one patron who became annoying in the bar in the evening but staff addressed this and he was moved on. The only thing wrong with the room was a lack of electrical points, had to unplug the kettle to use hair dryer which was behind a piece of furniture and difficult to reach. Nothing I disliked but if you like hotels to be well lit then this one isn't for you. The only fault with the hotel is the parking facility (which really isnt about the hotel) but you have to park about 5 mins away. The website said there was secure parking there was not. Parking was in a public pay-and-display car park which was some minutes walk away. £2 from 6.00pm to midnight but if users wanted to avoid the risk of penalties after the free midnight to 8.00am period they had to go any buy a ticket rather than having a lie-in. I didn't bother and got away with picking up the car at 9.25.Only issue was that the free internet connection never worked our entire stay and without their internet connection working they were not taking credit cards (ended using cash that we hadn't counted on). No reception area and bar staff too busy to attend. Also no card facillities/cash machine working at the time of our visit. Staff could of been a bit more friendly. Seemed a bit unorganised and we could not get a table for dinner either night. The hotel stated that there was secure parking. We assumed it was nearby but it was in a public car park quite a walking distance from the hotel. We were not happy with this. Bit more attention to detail in the room - eg bedside lights not working, Television not easy to understand!. car parking facilities are poor, having to book in ,leave luggage then drive round a busy town centre trying to locate car spaces...also i did feel that the cost for 1 nights stay was excessive, even if it was valentines( i did feel ripped off as car park fee of £10 should be at least included in the £175 cost of room !!!!!!!!!!!!. The two rooms we booked open directly onto a courtyard which is the smoking area for this very busy city centre pub. Noise levels outside the rooms were unbearable, with swearing and shouting directly outside the windows and doors of the rooms. They may as well have been inside the room with you. The other rooms in the hotel would obviosly have been a little quieter, as would a mid week stay.Understaffed on the night in which we dined, placing excess pressure on the delightful waitress who was on shift resulting in a poor dining experience. the staff were not very helpful and some lessons in customer service would be good. a smile and greeting costs nothing!!. Very noisey into the early hours. THAT's people, not things.
