This Lakeland slate house is 0.5 miles above Buttermere village, and ideal for the famous Haystacks walk. YHA Buttermere has a bar/restaurant with views of the Red Pike and High Stile mountains. Accommodation is in dormitory rooms, or private rooms with a shared bathroom. The majority of rooms contain bunk beds. A laundry facility and a lounge area are all on site. For making your own meals, YHA Buttermere also has a self-catering kitchen. Local ales and wines are served in the bar/restaurant. Walks of all levels start from Buttermere village, which is in a quieter area of the Lake District. Red squirrels and woodpeckers can often be spotted in the grounds. You can park for free, and store bicycles on site. There is also a drying room for wet clothes.

The £4.99 breakfast was fabulous as was the £9.99 two course evening meal. The setting of the hostel is superb surrounded by the Buttermere Fells and a short stroll to the Fish Inn in the village. Great staff and all the facilities we needed (well equipped kitchen, large drying room, and enough share bathrooms). Lovely quiet location close to everything we wanted to do in the Lake District.

The location is superb and very handy to some fantastic walks. This is the 2nd time my friend and I have stayed here and wouldn't hesitate to return. Simplicity. One of the showers not working but plenty of others. beds slightly on the small/ narrow side, although I am 6'3'' so understandable. Otherwise clean and comfortable. It was a bit out of the way for our activities (climbing Helvellyn) although the drives around about are very scenic. On the website I booked with I'm sure it was listed as only a few kilometres from Glenridding but this was incorrect. Male bunkbedroom a bit too stuffy at night, and fellow guests really should be discouraged from using their lap-tops, and other electronic "toys" at night when people want to sleep. The drive to the place as few steep climbs for the car. To get anywhere I had to drive several miles on a narrow and nerve-straining road. There is nothing to dislike. Closed on weekends. No sockets in bedrooms for driers. A little dated throughout. lounge area needs to be more homely and have more character. Nothing. Uncomfortable hard beds. Noisy clientèle making up beds just before midnight. Oven not working in kitchen. Lack of utensils in kitchen Expensive. B&Bs are cheaper. Drinks at bar a bit pricy. No hot water for showers which when youve come off a cold day in the hills is a bit of a disaster. beds uncomfortable, not enough parking space. Size of room and heating was poor. Room 14. Nothing to complain about. We paid £50 to stay in a single room, with television, ensuite bathroom and breakfast at a hotel We paid £45 to stay in a room with no television or ensuite toilet and bathroom Obvious difference. The beds are too short. I am 6'4" and it was a pretty uncomfortable couple of nights. The packed lunches are poor value for money. It can have more directions. Small members kitchen somewhat monopolised by three families during evening meal time and at breakfast. An 11 0 clock curfew - 'the front door will be locked, full-stop' - is ridiculous. Guests should have a key or door code like other hostels.
